College Recs and Nicknames

My counselor and teachers call me by my nickname and I’m afraid they mention me by my nickname in my recommendation and not my actual name. Is there a problem here?

If your nickname is “Goofy”, I don’t think you have a problem in that the teachers will probably know enough not to use that.

Unless it is a nickname that is inappropriate in any way it is fine

Is it the kind of nickname that you will list on the Common App, too, like RJ? If not, you can just remind them that your application will use your given name.

It’s like a normal but completely different name. Like Austin -> Connor. It’s too late to tell them now though.

You should certainly ask. Right now. They can address this with the schools to ensure that there is no mistake that when they refer in their statements to “Connor,” it is indeed “Austin,” to whom they are referring.

If you haven’t already submitted the common app, I would suggest that you include that name as your preferred name (nickname) in the profile section.

Go have a chat with your guidance counselors. They’ll help you sort it out. Your GCs can always contact your colleges to clarify the situation even if all the apps and letters have already been submitted.
