College Rescindment Advice : What do I do?

I just graduated from high school with 2 D’s in AP Statistics and Critical Thinking and Composition and 2 C’s in different courses unrelated to my major last semester. I plan to attend Dodge College at Chapman for Animation and Visual Effects. I told my admissions counselor about my possible D in Statistics before my semester ended, but was dumb and did not give an explanation to admissions before my final transcript was sent because I was hesitant.

Eventually, I got the scary letter of possible rescindment and immediately sent a response the following day.

FYI I did have a legitimate reason as to why my grades dropped so low (major family crisis).

After I sent my response, my counselor contacted me asking if I was remediating my courses and that my admission status highly depended on it… Now, I would 100% remediate my courses, but, my family crisis is still ongoing and due to its severity I cannot physically attend courses at community college during the summer ( they wanted me to remediate in a classroom setting not online). I informed my counselor and now its a waiting game. Btw, I understand that it is due to my own inaction that brought me here and I totally take responsibility for it even if my circumstance did play as a major factor to it

I’m here mostly to ask for advice on how I can still be proactive in this situation if possible, but also what I should do if I end up getting rescinded and how to handle it.

For those who respond, thank you very much for taking the time out of your day to help me out!

Explain that your family crisis is ongoing & that you will retake the classes online. As for being proactive, I suggest taking the classes online whether or not approved by Dodge College so that you can attend another school if rescinded by Dodge.

If you have an ongoing family crisis, the best plan may be to ask to defer the admission for a semester or year while the crisis plays out. In that time you would be able to work with the college to determine which classes (if indeed any) should be remediated, and the best way to get that done.

I have asked about a gap year before rescindment was an issue. My counselor said that they do not allow students who have been accepted to defer their enrollment. :confused: so that is not really an option for me

I’m sorry about the family crisis. I hope they let you take the courses online this summer. Agree that you might want to proactively sign up and do it now so that if you go to another college you can show you’ve addressed the poor performance issue already.

You might want to think about Jan admit options where you could apply as a back up in case you don’t get the answer you’re hoping for.

Good luck and hang in there. Life hits speed bumps but in the scheme of things this is something you can get over – don’t let your college dreams go by the wayside.

I would talk to your admission counselor directly and explain your situation. Once they have all the facts, they will make recommendations with the goal of ensuring your success. Good luck to you as you deal with your family situation and prepare for college.

//UPDATE//

Just wanted to let you all know that I have not been rescinded! (thankfully)However, the only condition that comes with this is that I have to start in the spring of 2019 instead of the fall of 2018! Although this is not ideal, this actually really helps me out since it gives me a lot more time to let my family situation stabilize.
But WOW, this situation along with my family situation has given me a loooot of anxiety and a looot of sleepless nights. I’ve never felt more relieved.

Super grateful to all those who responded, it really meant a lot to me!!! :slight_smile:
also thank you so much for giving me a chance Chapman!!!

This is great news! Happy for you and thank you for this update! Please make sure you get the support you need these next six months so you can keep your college dream on track, and I hope things stabilize for the better quickly
