I’m a junior in high school and we’re starting to talk to guidance counselors about our college search. I would like to become a physicians assistant but I’m not 100% sure where I’d like to go to college, although I’m thinking I want to stay in state. I live about 20 minutes away from SUNY Stony Brook University and Hospital. There are other schools like SUNYs for example that have great PA programs. The question I have is would it be foolish of me to go somewhere else in the state when a good program is so close to home, even though location is important to me as well as a new life experience away from high school?
There are a lot of choices out there, and they’re good for different kids for different reasons.
If you want to stay home, Stony Brook is a wonderful option!
But if you want to go away, it’s certainly not “foolish.” There are so many other SUNY choices that would give you a great education and also provide you with the experience of being on your own.
My advice would be not to close any doors. Apply to Stony Brook, apply elsewhere, and see where you are in April of your Senior year.
