College Students--How Much do you spend

Probably $20 - $30 a week, sometimes a bit more (if I have friends coming to visit), sometimes none at all. I'm investing in an unlimited T (subway) pass, so I won't have to worry about where I'm getting my money for transportation this year. The rest I generally spend on eating out or going to movies.

Holy crap - I can't believe you all spend so little as well.

I spend in the area of $150 a week or so - usually quite a bit more. But I do eat out a lot because I work 24 hour shifts. I also live off campus, and pay for groceries, etc. etc. But even when I lived in the dorms, $20-30 is ridiculously small.

I never really kept track of it that much, but at least $50 and probably up to $90. I have no idea how people keep it so low. I eat either on campus or right off campus for lunch every day during the week because I'm on-campus for most of the hours between 9-5. I don't have a meal plan anymore because I live off-campus. So that's like $5-6 a day, 5 days a week on fast food/restaurants, plus like $15-20 a week on groceries (I go shopping for them every 2 weeks and usually spend like 30-40), and gas for my car whenever I need it, which is like every two weeks I put about $20 in. Plus every couple weeks I might buy some alcohol so that's about 8 bucks, then I might buy a CD or a book or something every so often too. I don't really think that's unreasonable though. Some people here are just really cheap, I guess.

Well, I have a meal plan, so I only really eat out on the weekends. Public transportation costs a lot less than gas for a car, and because I live on campus, I only use that to go out on the weekends. I spent a lot more when I commuted to school my freshmen year - $40 every two days on gas, meals on campus at least once a day because I had no meal plan. Rather than saving money, I had to have a full time job just to pay for the gas to drive to and from school. It was ridiculous.

Minus the hookers and blow, I'd say it averages to $30-$50 a week.

Those are part of my scholarship so I didn't count them.

we don't have a very good public transportation system where I live. we have a university transit system, but that only goes on certain routes and just takes you back to the school. there's not anything that'll just like, take you to the grocery store or something, so you have to drive.

i was living campus and on the meal plan and go to school in a city with great public transportation, yet i still spent $50-$100 a week. it was quite excessive...

In my opinion, i dont believe that its about being cheap, sure theres some people who are extremely cheap for no reason, but you also have to consider families who have a low income. Im one of those people who was raised by a single mother, who works and sacrifices herself to help me out in college, not only me but my sister aswell who also attends college. Since i come from a low income family, I dont have the heart to be wasting like crazy just no reason.

I'm from a low income background, but instead of teaching me the value of a dollar, it's kind of given me an apathy towards money just because money management isn't something I think about when I don't have much to manage. Yes you can be cheap and frugal, but still spend impulsively. It's a really bad habit I picked up from my high school, which brings up that if you want to save money, you shouldn't hang out with people who constantly spend money and who are rich enough to do it without many consequences.

^ but that shouldn't stop you from making friends with them.

time to make money in the summer so you can just blow during the school year
cant knock a hustle, just get that money! have a good time!

It varies. Most weeks it's tops $30. And that's almost exclusively for public transportation.

I have 10 meals a week plus $500 in points a semester towards meals and other things at the on-campus convenience store. I don't need to really get much food because of that.

I don't understand how so many of you can spend that much. Glad my parents taught me how to manage my money...

Food outside my meal plan costs about $25, random stuff runs anywhere from $0 to $30, and poker money is about $10 =P
