College Suggestions

Hi I'm an upcoming senior just starting the application process. I currently live in Texas but I was born in China, yet I have Canadian citizenship (crazy, I know). Both my parents emigrated from China and went to Canadian schools (Dad- McGill, Mom-Concordia). I'm going to apply to both US and Canadian schools and here are a few I have in mind.

Stanford (dream, BIG reach)
McGill
UBC
UT Austin
Berkely

I'm looking for a top-tier school with strong engineering and medical programs as that is what I will most likely major in. I prefer schools set out in the rural but not too far from a city, like Stanford. I DO NOT like colleges that are right in the middle of a city, like McGill, Harvard.

My Stats
GPA 98.278 weighted
Top 10% 55 out of 596
AP Scholar with Distinction (4's on World, USH, Physics B, Comp Sci, Lang)
SAT: 2140 Essay:8
ACT: 34 Essay: 8

Thanks for reading.

What’s your financial situation? Have you calculated your EFC and will you be looking for aid?

As of right now I’m not considering the financial aspects. I just want a general list of possible schools that meet my criteria and I will then narrow it down from there. Our family is financial sound but I will definitely be looking for aid.

The University of Alberta is a very strong engineering school. It is in Edmonton but I think the campus is less intensely urban than McGill. Same goes for U Calgary.

U Waterloo and Queen’s University in Ontario are two more top Canadian engineering programs.

In the US, UT-Austin and Texas A&M are both great for engineering. Check out Iowa State too.

FWIW, my advice is to start with the financials. It’s much easier to build around that information.
