Is it bad to say that every college you apply to is your first choice in the "Why ____?" essays?

No, how would they figure it out? I mean if its like your safety safety safety school, then its pretty weird telling a school with a 90% acceptance rate that its your 1 choice when your stats are good for any top 50 school.

Well of course this could help draw away from Tuft's Syndrome, but there are moral/ethical questions associated with this.

It is not necessarily "bad". But you need to ask yourself whether you consider that ethical or not.

"You're my first choice" sounds like insincere flattery to me - even if it's true. At best, it's a waste of words - and you only have a limited space to communicate with the admissions officer.

Much better to stick to the specific reasons why school X is a great fit for you (and what you can contribute). Demonstrate your knowledge of the school, including its programs, students, and traditions. That approach will go further to show your feelings about the school.

Plus it's honest!

What I've always been told is that the school knows it's great, they know their strengths, yada yada yada. Instead of kissing up to them, explain why their university is the right fit for you.

Show them that they are your first choice. Show them what you know. Don't tell them.

Wow, I sound like my english teacher.
