Telling a school it's your first choice??

Should you tell your first choice school that it's your first choice? If so how would you go about doing that and would it help at all. Where would you write something like this? I was thinking maybe in the additional information section. But would you just say "_______ is my first choice"? That's be kind of weird wouldn't it?

You would do this by applying ED

or EA.....:)

i've heard you can have your gc attach a letter that says, this is so-and-so's first choice but they aren't applying early because they need to weigh financial packages (if this is the case), so i guess you could do something similar

Whoops forgot to clarify...I meant what can you do to tell a college it's your first choice if you can't apply ED because of financial issues.
What does anyone think of writing an additional essay...kind of like a why _______ essay, even though they don't ask for one. Would this be frowned upon or welcomed. If it matters this is specifically for Middlebury.

I don't think I would put it in the essay. Just send your regional adcom an e-mail after the app is submitted.

You can put this in a cover letter which you send with your application. Say College X is your first choice, and why.

cover letter? Never heard of this before for college admissions...can u elaborate on what I would do?

Nothing complicated about it - just attach a letter to your app saying Dear [director of admissions], enclosed is my application for College X. Then add a couple of paragraphs saying that College X is your first choice, and why.

I guess I'm not a big fan of letters. I'm not very good at writing them. In a letter I feel like I would be struggling for things to say and wouldn't be able to express myself as well as in an essay. I really like the Why ______ essays. I've written quite a few for other schools so far and they all really capture what I liek about that particular school.

The cover letter is essentially a compact, concise version of the Why ____ essay. I think doing it like jrpar suggested is a great idea.

I don't know if many schools take it very seriously. especially when an ed/ea option is available.

see " Why (insert college here)" Essays? on Parents Forum for description of what to include in a cover letter.

Shining - you'd be taking a couple of paragraphs from the Why X essay, and inserting these paragraphs in the letter. I don't think you would be using a different voice in the letter.

My kids' school recommends sending a cover letter with the application to each school if possible. Not necessary, but a nice touch.

I said it in my Why _______ essay.

what if you don't have a Why essay?

if you have an interview it would be okay to mention it to the interviewer right?

Celebrian, My S's gc says that they don't for the reason that you stated.
