So, for my first area of interest, I have put Economics on nearly all my colleges because it’s a practical major that I am interested in. I also do have Economics related ECs, and AP Macroeconomics is my best class on my mid-year report. However, for some of my supplements, I wrote about how writing has helped me throughout the years and has inspired me. It’s not the commonapp essay, but it is in about half my schools’ supplements. I also do have a strength academically in humanities more than anywhere else. However, I am not as interested in an English degree as an Economics one because one is more practical than the other. I have put my second choice for schools as English. I know that colleges like a narrative, so would swapping the two and putting English first benefit that narrative? Or does it not really matter?
If Economics is genuinely your first-choice major over a major like English, then stick to your guns here, and don’t switch. You say that you’ve displayed interest in Economics with your AP Macro class and related ECs, and your grades show a strength in the humanities/English. From what I’ve seen, it’s more than okay to have a secondary interest; it makes you look more like a real person, and in this day and age, I suspect colleges would appreciate an applicant who has a genuine interest in writing.
Also, at the end of the day, if you get rejected somewhere, whether the AO reading your app had their coffee order messed up that day will have mattered far more than whichever major you made your first choice.
Hope this helps, and good luck!
Don’t overthink this one.
They don’t second guess your interests. Not are you choosing a major now. They’ll see humanities ideas and humanities strengths and that’s fine.
you may consider using “Additional information” section in CommonApp to build the bridge between your ECs and career interests if you feel anxious about it.
Writing well is a big advantage in many economist roles. Embrace it!
