Colleges For Education?

Hi, I am planning to become a secondary science teacher. I have been looking around at several colleges, and I am wondering and asking which would be the best to become a science teacher. I hope to become a teacher in Texas, which is why I am looking at and hoping to attend and apply to a Texas college, even though I am out of state. Here is my current list…

University of Texas - One of the best schools in the Nation. The downside is that it is a little too expensive.

University of Houston - Nice growing school in a big city that seems to be becoming less of a commuter school.

Texas State University - I read that the education program at Texas State is one of the best in Texas. Nice campus life in a nice town in San Marcos.

University of North Texas - About an hour north of Dallas, which will lead to many job openings in the Metroplex. Nice campus life in the town of Denton.

University of Texas - Dallas - Seems to be a good school. Although the campus life seems to be dull, unlike UNT in Denton.

Which school do you think will be the best to become a teacher? Coming from Out of state, is UT worth it? Or would I be better off going to one of the other schools, such as Texas State with an assured scholarship, which I qualify for. Thanks!

Where do you want to end up? If you go to school there, your practicums and student teaching will give you contacts in the district you want to live in. Although if you are teaching in a critical need subject, it may make you an attractive candidate regardless. If money is issue, check out programs that will pay off loans in return for years teaching in high need areas.

My D is teacher and loves it but it is not a really high paying job, so definitely not a field where taking on debt is a good idea. I would try and get rid of options that required you to borrow money.

It may be cheaper to go to school in home state. If so, check early on into what Texas requires to certify as opposed to home state. Some states have better reciprocation than others. An if there is additional coursework you want to get it in as part of degree if possible.

Also, have you been a teacher cadet or experience in teaching area. Be sure you go to school you would be happy in if you change your mind. One of D2s friends wanted to teach until she spent real time teaching during a practicum and decided not for her.

If you’re open to a non Texas school, Vanderbilt has an excellent school of education and program. You mentioned cost so financial aid would be a big factor.
