Colleges for Musical Theater - PART 39 !

Sounds like there is much to celebrate for our seniors...we embark on our d's first tour of schools (she's a junior) in a few weeks. Four states, six schools, nine days...any hints for helping our d get the most out of the experience would be welcome.

I also send my congratulations and thanks to all of you for sharing your journeys. This site is so helpful. I don't post often - but I sure read often!

My D (also a junior)and I will be traveling to Boston for her spring break for a look at 3 colleges (BU for BFA Acting - BOCO - and Emerson - both for MT) Not renting a car - so we won't make it to Hartt this trip.

May your mailboxes be full of choices !

Jane

Soozievt,

I really thought I posted this message earlier, but I also send my congrats to your d! I know you are both excited and relieved to have choices! I am so happy for you as I have always thought you to be one of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable posters on this forum. My d and I have learned so much from reading your posts over the past year. Thanks and again, congrats!

Soozievt-

Congrats to your D! Nice to know the pressure is off.

I know someone who found out recently that they have been accepted to Ithaca's BFA MT program. It will be interesting to see if they both decide to attend the same program.

mtfan, I DID have my theory test at 3, I'm sure we must've met. You didn't happen to be on of the people that got a ride to the dance audition by that current student, the girl in the jean dress, were you?

No, i did not

I have been trying to send you an e-mail since Saturday regarding PSU. I keep getting delivery failure messages. Apparently AOL and Hotmail are refusing to play nice. I will try again. I don't want you to think I am ignoring you. (If you enable the private message function here at CC, I can send it that way.)

Kathy

Susan - likewise, let me add my enthusiastic congratulations!!!!
It is a wonderful thing to know there are great opportunities awaiting.

fingers_crossed -
We know several students who have gone off the waitlist and into the BW program in the last few years. As you know most kids are auditioning for several of the same programs. Look at your own situation, you are already accepted to 3 schools and you can only pick one.
best of luck to you!

Congrats to all of you getting good news. I guess all of us who have a choice will be deciding based on: 1) financial package/ overall expenses 2) balance in program strengths, faculty 3) campus appeal 4) distance from home/logistics of parents getting there to see their kids' shows 5 ) perceived opportunities, quality of shows seen, word of mouth, NY showcase, 6) bit of a concern re: academic rankings/status and... 7) size of school. Not so easy to sort it all out, but some of this will come down to intuition also.
Thanks to all of you great folks who have given me more info about PSU, and yes, Dancersmom, I did get your e-mail.

Rolling Admissions?
Looking towards 2005-2006, I'm trying to work out a tentative audition schedule for my S. We have a very "long list" (at the moment) and I'm interested in finding out which schools have rolling admissions. We are currently looking at:-

UMich, CCM, CMU, Tisch (Cap21), FSU, PSU, Syracuse, Webster, Emerson, Otterbein, Illinois-Weslyan, Elon, OCU, BoCo, UArts, Point Park, BW, Marymount Manhattan, Hartt. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

studio7, the fact that you know several people who have gotten off the waitlist currently raises my confidence about the situation. You bring up a good point, and many of the schools are taking the same people, and they obviously can't attend them all.
Thanks!

Also, if you clearly and truly have a first choice school that you know you want, and are on the waitlist, write to them and let them know that you are committing to go there if admitted. Worth a try as sometimes spots open up at the 11th hour. Won't help at the very most selective programs, but some of the other schools that do have more of a yield issue do not want to fool around when spots open up for the waitlist.

CMU, CCM, Tisch, PSU, Syracusem, OTterbein, BoCo definitely do not have rolling admissions. Tisch and Syracuse have binding ED. Emerson has EA. You can schedule very early auditions for Syracuse and CMU, however, you will not find out until March whether you are in or not. My suggestion is to split your list into the super reach "ivies" and the more attainable schools. Then split each list into 2005 and 2006 auditions. You want a mixed bag in each group cuz you just don't know how your kid will do early as opposed to late. You do learn from each audition, and my son who did the CMU, Syracuse, UMich auditions on the first available dates feels they were not his best takes. My friend's who did the pre holiday/post holiday split, says that there is no question he did better later. But then perhaps it was because he had all those early auditions. So by splitting them that way you are not putting your eggs all in one basket. Do a CD of the pieces and monologues when you make one of the accompaniments, in case you get sick or deferred or waitlisted. You can then send the CD with an update letter. Some off site auditions (Ithaca) request such a CD. Also by scheduling some early, you alleviate some of the stress if your student gets sick. Some schools like Syracuse flat out do not want to hear you if you are ill. So if you schedule early on, you can catch them at Unifieds or reschedule later if something happens. But you do have the weather to contend with when you are auditioning after Christmas, and the issue of some of these schools that roll in acceptances whether they notify you or not. There may not be many seats left at all when you audition late. On the other hand, some schools deliberately hold back earlier, and you have some advantage auditioning later as you are a fresh memory competing with some old stuff. That is where a lot of the luck comes into the process. I recommend spending the money for the LA auditions as a last minute pick up some options if things do not go well. That is an advantage of some rolling admissions as you can get a feel as to what the reception is to your audition. And you can call and ask for a critique if you are rejected and adjust things accordingly. But my friend's son picked up 9 auditions walking in at Unifieds in LA with no scheduled appointments and only one school charged an audition fee, maybe two. NYC and Chicago are too tightly packed to get that kind of yield.

Have fun, and break a leg!

fingers_crossed I have my fingers crossed for Baldwin-Wallace for you! lol! I'll most likely be going there next year and it would be great if more than one of us on this site ended up there!

Jamimom,
Thanks for the great advice/info! I'm curious . . . which schools are considered "Ivies"? UMich, CCM, CMU probably but where else? I've also read about "The top 10" but can't seem to get a list. Could you let me know what your thinking is on these? Thanks, again!

scogor - I posted a private message to you, as we have been visiting schools recently.

Thanks mtfan! I am as well. It sure would be great if a bunch of us ended up at some school together.

For the record, CCM IS rolling admissions.

Broadway32nd, have you recieved any additional info on BW? Like scholarships or even a visiting day for addmited students? And where do you think BW is on your choice of schools right now?

Broadway32nd,
Thanks for the info on CCM! :-}
