Colleges I Should Look At

Hi everyone,
I was wondering if you all could suggest to me a few schools to look at. I am interested in business and int. relations. I have no preference on location and size. Here are some of my stats to help you out. Thanks!

Objective:
SAT I superscore (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): 2170 (700/730/740/10) One sitting, will try again in the fall
SAT II (subject, score): haven't taken them yet- will do Math II and French
Unweighted/Weighted GPA: 3.53 unweighted, 3.74 weighted
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): School doesn't rank
AP/IB (place score in parentheses): US History (will come out soon, confident it's a 5), will do AP Eng and AP chem next year
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.):
Common Awards (AP Scholar, honor roll, NM things, etc.): honor roll, NHS, a bunch of other stuff concerning comm. service, good citizenship, and extracurricular honors

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (name, grade levels, leadership, description): DECA (9-12, president, business competition) Interact (10-12, General Project Manager, comm. service club) Yearbook (9-12, editor-in-chief) Student Council (11-12, Class Rep & Vice Pres.)
Job/Work Experience: intern @ law firm, AMC Theaters
Volunteer/Community Service:
Summer Experience: law internship (rising 10) global entrepreneurship program (rising 11) AMC (rising 12)
Athletics: Track & Field (3 yrs) --- not a contender for college track

Other:
U.S. State/Territory or Country: CA
School Type: Independent
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket Range: High
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development):URM

Already on my list I have:

ucla
uc Berkeley
UPenn
Cornell
Virginia
Loyola Marymount
Washington ( St. Louis)
Claremont Mckenna
Lehigh
UNC
Northeastern

I would look into Emory

It’s a good list. I would add 2 “lower” UCs as low match/possible safeties. Is there a particular reason why Loyola Marymouth is on your list? It’s very much a regional university, and not known outside of California. For business and international relations it may limit your first job options.

I put LMU as a sort of safety and it looked like a nice school. Are their business and int. relations programs not good?

It seems top heavy to me and doesn’t take enough advantage of your race by emphasizing schools with a known commitment to recruiting and admitting qualified Black students.

ucla
uc Berkeley
UPenn
Cornell
Virginia
Loyola Marymount
Washington ( St. Louis)
Claremont Mckenna
Lehigh
UNC
Northeastern

All but Northeastern and Lehigh (forget LM) are reaches, meaning it’s unlikely you would get into any of them, even though some of them (but not the UCs) will consider your URM status. Claremont McKenna might pay more attention to it than the others. I’d suggest you consider schools like Oberlin, Haverford, Emory, Brandeis, Georgetown, Boston College, etc. They are still reaches, but they aren’t as formidable as the school on your list.

Then you need to put together some matches, with or without the URM: Northeastern, Lehigh, Clemson, Tulane, Virginia Tech, University of Denver

Safeties: Kentucky, a 2nd tier UC

In re-reading this, it seems I’m telling you what to do. Sorry about that.

Oh no it’s fine. Thank you so much for the advice. I was worried about having too many reaches. I have looked at schools like BC, Emory, Tulane, and other UC’s such as Irvine, San Diego, and Davis. I’m familiar with the quality of the programs at BC, Georgetown, and Emory. How about the others? I’m really looking for schools with strong business programs.

UMD-CP, Delaware, USouth Carolina, Michigan State, and Pitt have good business schools and you’re a low match there. For IR, Clemson and Denver come to mind.

Thank you so much! I will look further into these schools.

What do you think of southern methodist and syracuse? I was told their business undergrad schools are good.

SMU and Syracuse are good schools. Are your parents willing to pay $50K/year?

Tufts is a bit of a reach, but they have an excellent IR major. Trinity College is apparently pretty good for finance if that’s the branch of business you’re looking into, but I don’t think they have much for IR–though it would probably be closer to a match.

@erin

Franklin & Marshall? American? George Washington?

I mean @"Erin’s Dad"‌ yes they will be able to pay that tuition. @kaarboer‌, thanks for the suggestions. I’ve heard of both of those schools but I haven’t researched Trinity much.

@International95 Yes, I’ve heard that those schools have great IR programs.

Holy Cross

Thanks
