[Where Does Your Freshman Class Come From? - Ohio State](http://chronicle.com/article/Interactive-Freshman-Class/129547/#id=204796)

I think scholarships make it competitive, but even with a $12k scholarship OOS tuition is $28k right? still with room and board you’re looking to the same costs as a UC around $27k-32k. Are classes impacted? Whats the faculty to student ratio. I’m sure those are all pluses a tOSU. I visited Berkeley many times, now that is a dilaptidated campus. Well everything looked bad except the engineering and bio building which were all new. Everything else was falling apart and its on a hill!

Freshman profile (enrolled autumn 2012)

New freshmen: 7,186
Ohio residents: 5,428 (75.5%)
Domestic out-of-state students: 1,168 (16.3%)
International students: 590 (8.2%)
Students of color: 1,238 (17.2%)
Male/female ratio: 50:50

Geographic diversity (Columbus campus, autumn 2012)
Ohio State enrolls students from every state and territory. States with the highest enrollment:

500+: Illinois, Pennsylvania, California, New York, Michigan
300 – 499: New Jersey, Texas, Maryland, Virginia
100 – 299: Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Kentucky, Connecticut, Minnesota, Tennessee, Washington, Missouri, Utah, Arizona
50 – 99: Colorado, West Virginia, South Carolina

With National Buckeye Scholarship of $12k for OOS, COA will be around $24k including room and board for tOSU. And most importantly, when it comes to state-of-the-art campus facilities coupled with abundant resources, unless we are talking about UCB or UCLA, most UC campuses simply do not come close to what Ohio State has to offer imho.

Really? I haven’t been for awhile. that surprises me. I know that the state is broke, but Cal isn’t a poor school.

Sparkeye,
Your claim that Ohio State has 500+ enrolled students from Michigan just doesn’t sound credible to me, based on US Department of Education stats on how many enrolled freshmen from Michigan enrolled at OSU in recent years:

2010 46
2008 55
2006 51
2004 51
2002 53

Pretty consistently around 50/year. That doesn’t add up to 500+ undergrads, unless they’re taking an average of 10 years to graduate, which would not speak well of the job the school is doing.

Going the other way, here’s how many Ohio residents enrolled as freshment at the University of Michigan:

2010 148
2008 134
2006 141
2004 181
2002 155

So roughly 3 times as many OhioAns going to Michigan as Michiganders going to Ohio State. As it should be.

Do your figures include grad students? If so, they’re very misleading when presented alongside what otherwise appear to be undergrad stats.

“So roughly 3 times as many OhioAns going to Michigan as Michiganders going to Ohio State. As it should be.”

Also I am certain that the majority of those Michigan residents attending tOSU are getting some sort of tuition reduction to attend. I am also certain that this not the case the other way around. I just can’t imagine that almost any student from Michigan would attend Ohio State unless they were bribed to do so or were in a graduate school program such as Medicine. ;-)

bclintonk, I don’t work for the school, I simply copied and pasted from tOSU’s website, so it does not really constitute as “my” claim. Nonetheless, you might be right that the data must have included graduate students in this case based on US Department of Education to have over 500 Michigan residents attending Ohio State!? Anyhow, since you also brought up Ohio State’s graduation rate, 6-yr graduation rate is currently at 82% which should be less than 10% of Michigan’s graduation rate this year I believe.

“Anyhow, since you also brought up Ohio State’s graduation rate, 6-yr graduation rate is currently at 82% which should be less than 10% of Michigan’s graduation rate this year I believe.”

Congratulations sparkeye!

Michigan’s FOUR year graduation rate for freshman entering in 2007: 75.8%

Ohio State FOUR year graduation rate (same time period): 58.4%

tOSU is definitely trending up however.
