I have two cats and I’ve begun my search for colleges but I can’t find any schools that a) have a good theater education program and b) won’t require me to live on campus. I would love to be able to live on campus but my family would adopt out my cats. Can anyone give me options to look at?
I know that Texas A&M doesn’t require it and has a decent theatre program
Neither Texas A&M (unless you are in the Corps of Cadets) nor UT-Austin require any student to live on campus because there is way more demand for on-campus housing at these two schools than there is supply. Most other Texas colleges require freshman to live on campus because their supply of on-campus housing far exceeds the demand.
Although most colleges list other reasons for requiring freshman to live on campus, the reality is that requiring freshman to live on campus is the college’s way to make sure their existing campus housing stays full each year…i.e. making sure they have a guaranteed revenue source each year from their dorms and meal plans.
I do not know much about theater programs in Texas (although I think it is a pretty cool major, BTW), but you might try looking into the “UT-commuter schools” around the state. Perhaps they will allow freshman to live off-campus; either that or go to community college or junior college and transfer to the school of your choice as a sophomore. Then you can live wherever you would like.
You are instate? Really, find out what actual options you have before worrying about the cats, is residential college even on the cards?
Looks like some do: Lamar, SHSU, TAMU-C, TAMU-CC, TSU, TTU, UH-V, UTRGV, UTT, UNT
Looks like some don’t: PVAMU, UH, UT Arlington, UTD, UTEP, UTSA
Those that do may have exceptions for commuter or non-traditional students.
“UNT Housing will consider requests for a commuter exemption for students that fall in to the following categories:
They wish to commute from the home of a parent, guardian or other adult relative that lives within a commutable distance.
They have significant life experience or maturity that would not be compatible with the objective of the on-campus housing policy.
They would suffer significant hardship because of insufficient finances or medical reasons that would result if the student were required to live on campus“
We live about 15 minutes away from UNT, I know plenty of kids from our high school who lived at home freshman year and commuted. I have kids in my family who live in suburbs a little further way (like 30 minutes) and commuted as well.
