Colleges in the Midwest with good theater programs

What are some public colleges in the Midwest with strong BFA acting programs?

CCM, IU, and Michigan are all public schools with strong bfa programs

Also Minnesota, Ball State, Evansville, Wright State

Evansville isn’t public, however.

Sorry, scratch Evansville.

It’s a good suggestion, though! Many of the wonderful private colleges in the Midwest offer great financial aid. Not sure why the OP specified public, but if cost is the reason, it’s worth considering Evansville, Otterbein, and many more that provide merit and talent awards!

No idea on the OP’s thoughts - but some people have very strong feeling on the public/private thing. We have friends with a D a couple years older where that was a hard rule. Fortunately she is a happy junior at IU- so it all worked out.

Minn was a great suggestion- but it brings up another question for OP- what do you consider “Midwest”? I had left it off my 1st post on this thread b/c I (personally) don’t think on minn as Midwest. (I’d call it Great Plains, but that isn’t important) As is often said- the more specifics we have, the more helpful we can be with advice!

I guess I’m equating the old (original pre-expansion) Big Ten with Midwest.

Perfectly valid - though if a million dollars were on the line I couldn’t tell you what schools/states that entailed

You obviously didn’t grow up in a sports obsessed Midwestern household.

Jkellynh17, lol your Big Ten comment led to me reciting the list (Born and reared in Ann Arbor) :

I asked my husband- he rolled his eyes (gave up on me years ago in that respect)

i think that the, er, fighting Illini (Illinois University) must have a decent program, based on their ownership of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival and the frequency with which they show up in Chicago theater programs. You see a fair amount of WIU and NIU as well.

I just remembered Wisconsin – Stevens Point is good, too.

Do you have any specific knowledge or information about how good the theatre program is at NIU? I haven’t found out a lot about it through the internet but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good program…maybe just not as known. Would love any advice or knowledge you could share.

I have a pretty good friend whose daughter came out of WIU and works all the tour, and my son knows one or two kids out of NIU through an internship with Oak Park Shakespeare, but no I don’t have any first hand knowledge of either program, sorry. You do see them in Chicago playbills though.

All the time, sorry

Definitely University of Minnesota BFA/Guthrie program. Illinois Wesleyan, Viterbo, might not be public but some substantial echo;airships to be had. echo;airships = auto correct for scholarships!?! So funny, I left it there.

I want to go to a school with airships.

University of Akron has some sort of partnership maintaining the Goodyear blimp fleet @jkellynh17 - never too late to chase a dream
