hello CCers,

So I am interested in International Relations (or Pol Sci) with a focus on Pre-Law and or financial economics.
If my EDI plans fall through I was considering applying EDII.

I love large universities but I have thought about my options and realized that Vandy is out of my league admissions wise. I am thinking about Claremont, Colgate, Emory or Washington and Lee.

Any opinions? I have only visited Colgate so I am hesitant to apply EDII anywhere else atm. However, these schools are all extremely strong so I do not feel that if I regretted it I couldn't transfer to a different school.

Have you looked at UVA, American, UNC, or Georgetown? All of these schools excel in international relations/poly sci (Georgetown and UVA have astounding programs). I have a friend at Emory who is a freshman and he loves it so far. I know nothing about Claremont and Colgate but I do know a decent amount about Wash and Lee.

W&L is a very good school, however it is incredibly conservative and the greek life is overwhelming, I did the math earlier this year and discovered about 190 students are NOT in greek life…about 1700 are (don’t quote me on those numbers but the numbers of those active in greek life are incredibly high). W&L is also astoundingly preppy. I consider myself pretty preppy and I felt out of place on campus. In addition the athletics there are pretty good but sports attendance is dismal. All that being said about W&L if you go there, they look out for their own. They will do whatever it takes to help you get a job and they have alums in high places.

Is money a factor? If you’re OOS total cost at UVA is around 50k I think, and UNC is 45k.

Some of the schools you’re considering (Claremont McKenna, Emory, W&L) are about as selective as Vanderbilt. Colgate isn’t far behind.

American University and George Washington are less selective schools with strong IR programs.

the preppiness actually doesn’t phase me. I go to an elite private school in NE so I basically wear polos 24/7 and already love greek life…

I have my list basically made, I don’t want to add more schools. Just work with the ones I have.
@tk I think Vandy is more selective overall. Even though the others are in the same league they are marginally easier.
