Colleges/Universities With Strong Sports Journalism Programs

Alright, so I'm definitely set on becoming a sports journalist. Sports and writing are 2 things I love, so why not? I was wondering if you guys could let me know of good programs for sports journalism.

2 pieces of criteria:

I would like it to be either in California or within a day's drive from Knoxville, TN.
It needs to be fairly well respected.

That's all. Thanks in advance.

Also, would it be better to get into sports marketing/management or sports journalism?

Anybody out there?

Northwestern University

University of Missouri- Columbia

Syracuse

Are those good for journalism, sports marketing/management, or both? Also, I guess you didn’t read that closely…because there’s no way Syracuse is a day’s drive…heh.

But thanks anyway. Anyone else?

If a Div III LAC is okay take a look at Washington & Lee.

It’s also one one of the oldest, if not the oldest Journalism school in the country.

I think it’s also within a day’s drive of Knoxville

Here’s a link:

[Department of Journalism and Mass Communications](<a href=“Journalism and Mass Communications : Washington and Lee University”>http://journalism.wlu.edu/)

Syracuse is probably the best in the country for sports journalism. They basically feed people to ESPN. Even Shaq was required to take a Syracuse course before ESPN let him come on the air.

[Knoxville, TN to syracuse ny - Google Maps](http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Knoxville,+TN+to+syracuse+ny&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=35.631106,73.212891&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=6)

I read closer than you, apparently.

And they’re the top three undergraduate journalism programs, all with big time sports. (Syarcuse with Big East Basketball, Northwestern with Big Ten Football/ Basketball*, and Missouri with Big 12 Football).

*Not a winning program in Basketball

No way am I driving 13 hours in a day haha…that’s a 2 day trip…but if there’s any exception to the 1 day driving rule, it’ll be Syracuse. How hard is it to get into that program?

I would honestly do sports management over journalism… Journalism is slowly dying as newspapers continue to decline and fold.

UNC Chapel Hill has a highly respected journalism school with a concentration in [Sports Communication](http://www.jomc.unc.edu/current-students-content-items/sports-communication).

Along with Ithaca, Missouri, Emerson, and Iowa, it was one of 5 colleges asked to cover the Olympics.

According to Google Maps, it’s about a 5-6 hour drive from Knoxville.

Look into a college that has a TV station. If you broaden your west coast horizon beyond California, take a look at Washington State University in Pullman, home of the Edward R. Murrow School.

What should one do if they want to work in sports journalism / photography.
I hear majoring in Journalism is taboo because it is a dying breed.

Not true. I have a friend at UNC-Chapel Hill who is majoring in photojournalism. He shoots for the student paper, goes to every game, travels with the football/basketball teams for their away games, and is always on the field or courtside. He’s already had some of his work featured on CNN and ESPN.

It’s all about the work you do and the connections you make.

Indiana University in Bloomington has one of the best journalism programs in the country, as well as very close ties with IUPUI in Indianapolis, which is part of the IU system, as well as the IU-Bloomington journalism school. IUPUI is home to a sports journalism center. Check it out.

Colomichael, are you being paid by Indiana to plug 'em on CC? You’re dredging up posts from last year, for goodness sake…

Penn State…checkout the PBS documentary ([‘The Paper’](<a href=“http://live.psu.edu/story/27662]'The”>http://live.psu.edu/story/27662)) that was made on their department.

Elon in North Carolina has an excellent journalism school

There are still jobs in journalism - maybe not as many at newspapers, but we can’t find enough people to hire for our tv producing and reporter positions. We also have a lot of sports positions. Two open right now - FT and PT. There ARE jobs in journalism, do not let the headlines about the decline of print lead you away for journalism.

Wash and Lee may be one of the oldest but Mizzou is THE original and oldest. In fact The Missouri Method is a standard for teaching journalism by doing. Mizzou has its own newspaper that is run like a for profit regional newspaper (for profit, ha!) but has students doing much of the reporting. It also has its own TV station, KOMU, affiliated with NBC where students do much of the late, weekend and holiday newscasts and reporting. Professionals like Elizabeth Vargas and ESPN’s John Anderson got their starts there.
