Colleges With Good Music and Science departments?

So I posted earlier about wanting to double major in music and biology( because i want to be a vet) I now know that double majoring is virtually impossible and difficult to do. I was wondering if minoring in music is an option? If not do you know of any schools that have orchestras for non-major students because I love my violin and I don't want to have to choose :(

Many of the schools with really good conservatory-based music programs, such as Rochester/Eastman, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, and many others offer a second tier orchestra for less intensive music students. Check each school for what they offer, and take your question to the CC music board for great information.

There are lots of schools where you can major in Biology and also play in a non-conservatory-based orchestra. Really - so many I wouldn’t want to start listing them. Certainly most of the Top-50 private universities fit this description; also most of the Top LAC’s. Also, most state flagships. What kinds of schools are you looking at?

I think you’ve misunderstood the advice you’ve been given. Double majoring while in a music conservatory program is difficult but not impossible. Double majoring in music and a science at any one of dozens of universities and liberal arts colleges is neither impossible nor difficult.

Even if you don’t end up majoring (or minoring) in music, MANY colleges offer performance opportunities and want and need musicians in their student bodies.

Start by indicating your grades and financial situation, plus your preference on size of college and geographic location. You’ll get lots of solid suggestions.

My D is a violin-playing chemistry major. Over the past year and a half we looked at a lot of LACs with her (she wanted a small school)…I think every school we looked at had an orchestra she could play in as well as lessons that were available if she wanted to take them…she has been accepted into a school ED for next fall and has already been in touch with the orchestra teacher who told her how to enroll in the orchestra. So it is very possible to continue in the orchestra as a non-music major at a LAC and I imagine would also be very do-able at almost any college or university.
