I'm a junior in high school and i'm trying to formulate a college list, but i'm having trouble with it. I LOVE playing my violin so I want to do music in college( like a preformance major) but I also want to be a veterinarian. I was thinking abount double majoring in biology and music. Do any of you have any suggestions on any good colleges with good music and science programs. I am taking 6 IB classes ( similar to AP) and should have a 3.9-4.0 by the end of the semester. Help :) ?

Carnegie Mellon University
Johns Hopkins University

New York University
Northwestern University
Rice University
University of Michigan-Ann Arbor
University of Southern California

music, Are you looking for a conservatory or just a good music department. If you’re interested in small liberal arts colleges, then I would suggest Williams and Wesleyan. Both have excellent sciences and excellent music departments. If you are female, Smith.

You should be clear on your financial situation as well as private college are all expensive. This is really your first step. If you need financial aid and your family qualifies for need based aid, then you can proceed with an open list. If you are looking for merit based aid, then you’ll have to concentrate on schools that offer it.

One of the problems with some of the colleges listed above, such as Carnegie Mellon and Johns Hopkins, is that it is very difficult to double major in music and science. These schools have great programs in both, but you have to get in to the conservatory portion of the school, and double majoring often takes longer than four years to complete. Also, many science labs are in the afternoons, and orchestra practice is often in the afternoons. Johns Hopkins has a great article on their website about being a double major.

One option would be to check out schools with less rigorous music programs that are not conservatory based if you want to double major. You could get more information about this on the CC music board. Good luck.

Other majors to consider would be music and math or music and physics. Math and physics both would be fine majors for vet school provided you take care of the vet prereqs.

This, by the way, is a really nice resource for figuring out what those prereqs are:
http://www.aavmc.org/data/files/vmcas/prerequisite_chart_2013.pdf

Finally, I recommend a small liberal arts college for a combination like music and science. You’ll have more opportunity to actually combine the two majors and at many schools you’ll get superior pre-med(vet) advising.

It is just about impossible to major in music and science at ANY school with a true BM (B. Music) degree. The labs usually conflict with the performance groups and clinics. Besides that, it would be too demanding and 99% chance you would drop one of them.

You could do that with double degree program at Oberlin (requires admission to both the college and the conservatory), but it will take you 5 years.

Most good schools will have good biology and music depts. You need to provide more information if you want suggestions:

1) your test scores
2) what your family can afford
3) size of school you prefer (LAC, medium sized, large state U)
4) location (part of country, distance from home, weather, urban/suburban/small college town)
5) culture (preppy, intellectual, rah-rah, granola, artsy, quirky, etc…)
6) deal-breakers (religious, single sex, etc…)

We can then make suggestions that might be a fit.

Just to name three others:

-Vanderbilt
-UMiami
-URochester

These are all wonderful schools that have well known Music & Science programs
