My 2023 son has narrowed down his options to CSU (CO State), ASU and CofC. He is a B student from N. Cal and climate wise, all of these appeal to him as he likes to ski, but also enjoys warm weather. Financially, ASU has given him enough money to compare with CA state schools (which we haven’t heard from but aren’t counting on). He is eligible for WUE scholarship at CSU but wont hear until late Feb. CofC will likely be too expensive but not completely off the table yet.
I’m interested in thoughts or comparisons for business/marketing, and overall school experience. He is somewhat conservative, somewhat social and wants a school with spirit, energy and more to do that just house parties. He really liked both Tempe and Fort Collins and has not yet seen Charleston. Thanks!
Wow, three schools that are crazy different. The only commonality is - the Dean at CSU Beth Walker was a Prof at ASU.
So ASU is your huge multi campus - gigantic school - where I got my MBA. It’s a leader in several fields, most notably supply chain. It’s not urban but it’s in society. Skiing is just three hours away - near Flagstaff. There’s also other skiing - Mt. Lemon and some in the White Mountains. Mt. Lemon is by U of Arizona, which you didn’t mention but is a safety and is smaller than ASU and a more traditional campus. But with a “B” average there won’t be much merit.
CSU is smaller - but not small. Of course, it’s in a city but not “the city”, a good ways from Denver. Skiing is not close - unless I’m missing something - Eldora is a ways away as is Winter Park. Closer than ASU but not by far.
College of Charleston is totally different. It’s in a city. The campus is urban - what campus there is. The B School is quite nice - my daughter (not a student in the B School) studies there and raves about how modern it is. It’s a school of 10,000 so much smaller than the others - and yes, unless you’re in the Honors Colelge, merit is hard to come by. There is definitely a party vibe at C of C but there will be at all three. C of C has spirit even though it has no football. Right now the basketball team is good. Also, when you move off campus and most kids do, Charleston is downright pricey relative to other schools.
It sounds like costs matter - so in that case - it sounds like ASU or CSU would be the better fit.
If he likes to ski, has he looked at Utah or Nev Reno for WUE?
Good luck.
Thank you so much for all of your insight! It sounds like while different, these are all solid options. He will have a decision from Univ of Utah in mid January, and if admitted, that should be a contender too. He has seen Reno, but it’s not on his list. Really appreciate all the time you took to describe each school.
