Columbia 2015 hopefuls

@gaga you can just click on my profile and message it to me.
@photographer do you wanna read my essay too? :slight_smile:
I hate this waiting game, it makes me so paranoid, like i want to calm down and not care but I can’t!

So I did apply ED already (obviously), and my intended major is Philosophy. And I’m a white female, so there’s really no diversity there…

GPA: 4.369 W (my school’s unweighted computing system has been down for ages…)
Rank: 21/464, so I’m in the top 5%, but competition at my school is crazy. It will go up this semester, with the addition of 3 more APs that I’m making A’s in
SAT I: CR 800 W 730 M 640 (ok, yeah, that’s really bad, I know)…so a 2170 cumulative
SAT IIs: U.S. History: 780, Lit: 620 (also terrible, but I had no time to take it again)
ACT: 32
ECs: Mock Trial Captain (this is my main EC because it takes up ALL of my time), Environmental Club Vice President (2 years running), Theater Crew Stage Manager, Integrity Society (an invitation-only club for revising academic honesty policy), NHS, NEHS (English), Mu Alpha Theta, SNHS (Science), SHF (French Honors), International Thespian Society, French Club, SPEAK club (genocide awareness club), Freshman Mentor Program (make lesson plans and teach freshmen homerooms every week/give school tours), LIGHTS program (help new kids acclimate), Model UN, Young Democrats Club, Science Olympiad (team went to state its first year), Chemistry Olympiad…and I think that’s it.
Awards: Girls State Citizen (elected city party delegate/nominated supreme court justice), Good Citizen Award, French Student of the Year (two years running), a few awards for the National French Contest…
Volunteering: Salvation Army, cleaned art/gave tours for a local art museum/botanical garden, random service for clubs…
Recs: Golden. One teacher said I was not only one of her favorite students ever, but one of her favorite people (and she’s known be since before I had her)
Essay: Unique, abstract, but really good (or at least everyone who’s read it has said so). I wrote less about what has happened to me and more about…me as a person and thinker.
Hook: Unique mind/perspective/odd cultural heritage (Swedish from my dad, but Deep South from my mom…like I grew up with herring and boiled peanuts)
Interview: I know these don’t really matter that much (which was literally the first thing my interviewer said to me), but it was…weird. It felt less like a getting to know you session and more like a test. It went perfectly fine, but not outstanding.

Mostly, this is just to quel my anxiety about decision time. I’ve already pretty much crafted my rejection letter in my head, but you know, it’s always worth a shot. :)

I’d have to say consider your anxiety quelled. Other than your SATII Lit score, which im sure is made up for by the perfect CR, your application looks rather compelling. I’m almost reluctant to say that becauseit makes me scared I won’t get in hahah.

“when do we get the confirmation email that tells us when they will upload their decisions?”

I don’t know. I’m like you.

The problem with EDing to such an amazing school is all our applications are so damn similar… It’s incredible. I’m just hoping a bunch of crap students applied early lol. LET US ALL IN.

“LET US ALL IN.”

Ameen. Forget the RD kids. Just take all the ED! :D

hahah silence, people come on here expecting like some inside source to provide all the details, i love it. and clippers I know im hoping just some mediocre people took advantage of the common app and were like “i wanna go to columbia because its an ivy and smart people go there”

@ gagafan

If there’s no important formatting, you can just send it in a PM.

@die4columbia

I never tire of reading admissions essays! Feel free to send a PM of yours as well.

Seriously! Could you imagine if one year Columbia was like, “screw it, let’s just accept our entire freshman class from ED.” If only…

@die4columbia

Aw, thanks! I just hope the adcom agrees!

@clippers

Hahaha…yeah. I have a friend who’s EDing to Brown, and that’s exactly what he’s been saying all along, because you know there are people who aren’t really qualified who are applying. I know a girl who is, bless her heart, applying to Princeton with an ACT of 24 and not a ton of ECs. She’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and she’s not stupid, but that’s just…not going to happen. So, things like that do happen. I’ll bet it’s a small percentage, but there are some who can be knocked out pretty quickly probably. I want to feel bad for them, but I’ve worked so hard for it and want it so badly that I just…can’t.

@Photographer

I don’t want to glom, but would you mind looking at mine? It’s kind of out there…but I am applying for philosophy, so it kind of works. I hope. I wouldn’t ask except that it is kind of an unusual essay and I feel like reviews could be mixed.

@baldrick I completely agree with you! We worked hard for where we are so we deserve to be at Columbia >:( lol. Whatever is supposed to happen will happen :smiley: it’ll be okay! Admitted, Deferred, Denied, I’m still me. I’ll just be a very, very, very sad me.

@Baldrick

Feel free to send a PM. Writing and reading are passions of mine, and it’s fun sampling the work of my peers!

Ill agree with that too, ill be a VERY depressed me. I’ll read yours also baldrick, if you’d like, im pretty good at being very candid.

send it to me too i’d like to read it =)

Columbia RDer here. 10 kids in my school applied ED this year, and 3 or 4 of them are just absolutely amazing. I’m hoping that they all get accepted so that they withdraw their HYPS apps for the RD round lol.

@Photographer, @die4columbia, @gagafan123

Thanks, guys! I’ll send it along, then!

Honestly I’m really banking on the fact that I come from a realllllly good school and that only one other student is EDing from there and I THINK I am more qualified than he is… I certainly hope so cause if I can’t beat another guy from my own school than I am f***ed lol.

If you are different from this person, beyond grades and test scores, then they won’t compare you to him.

who thinks they will be accepted? lol…if you do list your SAT/ACT and rank? lol
