I want to apply, but only after I take the SAT in October and raise my score...

It’s A Huge Reach school. My current SAT score is 1580 and my gpa is 3.4 weighted with a 3 on AP chem and English. I am Puertorican and been told my college essay is superb. I will have ap physics b , ap bio , ap gov and ap literature this coming year. I am president of National Honor Society in my school(which i know doesn’t help a lot) but still. i do many clubs and will start 4 new ones. i have won a dominican student award and high honor rolls. I just know I have like 1% chance of getting in. I’m relying totally on my essay and the SAT coming in October. Any advice on what to do? I need to make myself stand out with low grades… I’ve been trying to think of something for weeks… Any tips/suggestions/comments?

Also: if anyone is applying, post here…

Just make sure your list of schools is broad enough. Like you wrote, no one has a good chance. Your unspectacular GPA lessens yours in the Columbia pool. Good luck.

Thanks for the luck T26E4

I’m applying. I’ve sent my commonapp in today. The I’ll be done with the supplement by tomorrow.
My resume is fine to the point where I should at least have a slight chance. All I’m concerned about is the ACT. I’ll be done with ACT prep by tomorrow. Minus the workbooks and ACT 36. I’ll start practice tests and the workbooks/ACT 36 from Sep (After watching the iTunes festival :D) and see where I stand. I’m sitting for the Sep 21st ACT. If I don’t do well (I HOPE I DO :scared: ), I’ll register for the Oct one before Sep 27th. I personally think I might be able to manage a decent score but after reading everything on CC, it seems there is something especially hard about the ACT that i’m missing (Am I?) except the fact that a lot of practice is important.
I’m applying ED and don’t require aid. Does that matter?

Good luck on that ACT. I personally don’t know much about it except that it has science. I’ve been focusing hard for the SAT in oct.
Applying ED, I guess it’s good that you don’t need aid, but then your grades have to be sharp. Most people with money do well. If anything, if you do get rejected, apply RD but add stuff to your app, or even take the SAT/ACT again to improve your score.

For those common app questions columbia asks, I kind of dont want to seem sophisticated to a point where I sound fake. But then again, I know I need to show passion and detail.

For the essays, don’t try to sound like anything but yourself. They say to write in your own voice, so pretend like you’re writing to someone you’re always yourself around, like your mom or best friend. I’m applying to Columbia tooooo

Applying to Columbia here as an international, anyone else an international here as well?

@NYLannister I am! You probably know me from the Pakistani forums. Which city are you from? I’m sitting for some SATII’s in Oct at Choeifat

I’m applying
I’m from New Mexico … and no im not an international student lol ;)

I’m applying early decision. This is my dream school!

Uhhh no. 100% incorrect.

Once rejected in the ED round, you’re ineligible to apply that year’s RD round. If one is deferred, then they are still in consideration.

Wanna: let me be blunt with you. I give college fair info sessions for my alma mater, a Columbia peer college. Your SAT and GPA make you a completely non-viable applicant in my honest opinion. You should not apply ED to Columbia but use that energy to find some EA schools to target. Columbia rejects 1000s of near 4.0 GPA applicants with +2000 SATs. Your 3.4 and 1580 are several standard deviations from the admitted students norm.

Me! Just curious, what about Columbia appeals to you all?

Right here bby! My scores aren’t that bad (3.97 UW GPA, 34 ACT), but I’m totally not counting on getting in just because of how much of a crapshoot the Ivy acceptances are. I’d be ECSTATIC if I beat the odds and made it in, though. Columbia’s been my dream school for years. I visited the campus for the first time this summer and fell in love with it. It doesn’t hurt that it’s right in the heart of New York, either.
SHOPPING ALL WEEKENDDDDD!

I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 31 ACT. Do people make it in with 31 ACTs ever? I’m relying on this september 21st ACT as well

@Wannabedocc: Listen well to T26E4. Don’t waste whatever benefit early (ED or EA) confers on you by applying to Columbia. Most applicants have very little chance of getting in, and you are not at the top of the applicant pool. Anyone who tells you otherwise either loves you or is being dishonest.

Apply EA/ED/RD to a range of schools (reach, match, and safety). My recommendation is to apply Early Action (not ED) to a few schools in the range, which will provide a “floor” upon which you can hope to improve during the RD round. If you want to apply to Columbia in the RD round, go for it.

does columbia look for a well rounded student or a well rounded class?

Thanks Ixnaybob
Needed some advice
