Columbia Class of 2020 ED Applicant Thread

@aspenz When I’m on a transpacific flight I sleep or watch movies, lmao

Any other (hopeful) future CS majors applying to CC? I feel like a bit of an outlier here for not applying to SEAS…

Also, @soph1112, I live pretty far away, too, but I’m super vamped to meet new people! And besides, if any of us get in… I mean, I guess we’ll sort of know each other already, right? You can all chill and come climbing with me

Actually, to take our minds off our impending fates, I’ve got a question: what do you all do in your free time? And not NHS. Like, things that you actually do for fun, like reading sappy grocery-store-checkout-line chicklit or collecting stamps or stalking free shows or whatever.

3 days, 21 hours, 6 minutes and 41 seconds and it feels like it’s a year away.

@dr0wning But I mean, most of the students in Columbia are from NY State or mid atlantic i think

@wherevioletsgrow I’m also going for CS! But I applied to SEAS D:

@melonmelly I did mech e for SEAS! My best friend applied to SEAS with CS too, but she was worried that she didn’t have a lot of CS extracurriculars, do you think it matters?

@soph1112 Scared? I’m honestly too “distant” to be scared lol. I left my family behind years ago to come to the States, and there’s simply no turning back now  Being around strangers is nothing unusual to me, and trust me, that is the beauty of life. Don’t be scared, because life is always going to turn out the way you hoped. I’m literally 7,400 miles away from home, and I want to get into Columbia so bad so that I can cut down my flight time down from 24 hours to 15 hours…

@alpha525 mid atlantic is northeast right?
I’m from a socal suburb, so @soph1112 you won’t be the only one from a completely different place!

@TrazCapDEV where are you from?

@dr0wning Yeah. Like Pennsylvania, New York, NJ, Connecticut

@melonmelly sweet! Well, then, here’s hoping we both get to see each other in class next year  I mean, the program’s pretty much the same aside from the fact that I’d take the regular Core where you’d do the Engineering Core.

Also, @graceann, I’m not really one to talk, considering the fact that I’m just some random senior giving her two cents, but I think that so long as she expressed some sort of interest in CS, the fact that her entire life doesn’t revolve around tech is probably going to be a-ok.

@graceann kinda difficult to explain… My family immigrated(sort of) and I’ve been living in DC for several years, but my parents actually don’t live with me and they are still back in China due various reasons, but that’s where I can most comfortably call home.

Thanks for the encouraging words guys

@graceann @wherevioletsgrow agreed! it’s important to express interest in something, but I think it’s perfectly fine if she didn’t do everything computers. the point of college is to explore and delve into those areas anyways

And @wherevioletsgrow … I absolutely love art. I love watercolor more than anything, but I embroider as well! I would be a visual arts major if I truly thought I had a future in it, but it’s more for my own enjoyment!

Aside from that, I’m a total movie junkie. Also I love reading so much, but I haven’t had the time to read much lately. :frowning: Ummm I guess I go to concerts a lot too!!

What about you guys?

@soph1112 @wherevioletsgrow I love going to concerts and to the movies with my friends! I like to read and go shopping while I’m not doing my EC’s and schoolwork. I like to be busy!

It really nice how lively this thread is getting right now!

I like reading, listening to music, and watching TV. I’m also a fencer! Unfortunately I’ve had to cut back on training recently because of college apps and senior stress, but I love it and compete in regional and 2 national competitions. I also like watching youtube videos. Makeup tutorials, asmr videos, comedy are my favorites! I used to read Wattpad a lot (lol) but the quality has decreased. Askreddit gives hours of entertainment though!
@soph1112 Embroidery is really unique! My sister like cross-stitching, we tease her by calling her a grandma lol

@wherevioletsgrow @soph1112 I haven’t posted here before, but I play trumpet and read books, articles, and papers. That reminds me of a question I’ve been wanting to ask you guys: what did you put down for the books you read for pleasure and enjoyed the most in the past year? I put:

The House of Hunger; Eldest Son by Han Suyin; The Morning Deluge by Han Suyin; The 51 Day War by Max Blumenthal; The Political Economy of Third World Interventionism by David N. Gibbs; The Wretched of the Earth; A Dying Colonialism; Will The Boat Sink the Water? The Life of China’s Peasants; (in Russian) Ancient History of China by Fan Wen-lan; (in Russian) The Armed Struggle of the Algerian People for Independence in the 19th Century by Nataliya Georgievna Khmelyova; The Colonizer and the Colonized; Discourses on Colonialism; The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine; Expulsion of the Palestinians by Nur Masalha.
