Till what date are likely letters sent out?
Also, any international student here who applied for aid and got deferred?
@CollegeGuru2020 I had actually mentioned the professors that I wanted to continue my research under in my ‘Why Columbia’ essays. I dont think that it would be wise to repeat it over here. I think that 10k is total, but I’m not too sure. I’ll ask one of my friends who got it last year and let you know.
Which colleges are you considering now? Are you sure that you’ll attend Columbia if given the scholarship?
@Anonymoose3 Like I said above, it’s official as can be without being an actual acceptance, which Ivies are barred from offering until March 31st. Unless you plan to be felony convicted, submit fraudulent admissions docs or fail your classes, simply “smile and nod” to your worrywort parents/family. A likely letter is a powerful tool that originally was given to recruited athletes. Without the ironclad agreement, they’d simply accept other offers. LLs are honored. Otherwise, the entire school would be catastrophically affected. It’d be akin to the US Treasury not making TBill payments. You’re fine. Go celebrate.
@anotherdude In the history of this site, I know of only one reported rescission after an early admit. Look up a user named “chocochips” or something like that in the Dartmouth forum (or maybe Cornell). He tanked his final grades and DMouth made him take a year off before allowing him to start. He discussed his journey and really has seemed to have matured and done well. Here’s what to avoid: Ds, Fs, Felonies and Fraud.
@vk1499 LLs are able to be sent out between Oct 1 and Mar 15 by joint Ivy agreement. Also, plenty of internationals who applied for FinAid got deferred. That’s not unusual at all.
@T26E4 I see. Thanks
Just out of curiosity, did anyone receive an email yesterday with a reminder to complete the financial aid application?
@wshakespeare yes i did
@TheLastofUs9 thanks! I’m glad it’s generic, I’m not quite ready to start the torture of reading into things too much
@vk1499 Yeah, I applied for financial aid (international applicant) and got deferred. It’s pretty common for need-aware colleges to defer international applicants solely on the basis of their financial requirements.
Hi everyone! This is the first time I’ve commented in this thread. I’m international and just received a likely letter from Columbia. Super excited!
Was the letter in the form of an email from Columbia?
@skotlyar I got an email and then a paper version in the mail a few days later. My counselor/recommender also got an email
@hershey2010 how much time did it take for you to get your LL in mail? I got mine through email 2 days back, and I havent got it through mail yet
@anotherdude three days
i got a likely letter. i applied as a biology major with decent scores (2300+ SAT, ISEFs, olympiad semis, letter of rec from ivy professor and columbia alum) and also emphasized why I was a good fit for Columbia since I’m also interested in social justice and literature and got a couple of latin/model UN awards. My grades, however, weren’t so good (3.75 - 3.8 unweighted I think, lots of A-s and a B+ in calculus (shock, i know) ); I go to a super grade deflated school :’( . I think that they may drop even lower this semester because of senioritis and some issues with my family… and by low I mean really low. Columbia is my top choice right now will they rescind the offer??
@ms3108 Ok, let’s hope for the best!
@GrapePocky No
I’m kind of upset because I asked someone to write a recommendation letter for me and they agreed, but they STILL haven’t sent it in It was basically my last hope too
@GrapePocky Congratulations! I don’t think they will. Have they received your mid year report? If they have and sent you a likely despite seeing your grades, then I don’t think they will rescind your offer.
@skotlyar Yup! I haven’t received my letter in the mail yet, probably because I’m not in the US
