@GrapePocky My guidance counselor told me that short of getting 60s or failing, it is unlikely they will rescind the offer. She also told me colleges are aware of senioritis and won’t told it too much against us
@thetsaria so do they rescind offers for getting 60s? I’m an international student, and in my school, a 60 is a B grade.
@anotherdude Thanks, let me know if you hear anything. I got into Stanford and UChicago so I have some thinking to do but having money to do your own research is very attractive.
@anotherdude Wow, really? That’s pretty harsh. I’m pretty sure at most high schools, a 60 is about a D (at least at my own).
At the end of the day, they’re only asking you to maintain the grades that you applied with. If you had applied and got in with 70s (god only knows how), then dropping to a 60 in one or two classes would probably not matter so much. Same as if you applied with 90s and then dropped to an 80 in a few classes.
@thetsaria Yeah, my school is fairly rigorous, so we have a slightly lenient grading curve. I had 90+ grades right throughout high school :-p It’s just that these final exams aren’t going that well due to some health reasons and other things that need more attention. I had a friend who had the same issue, but an Ivy (which also sent him a LL) did not rescind his offer. But of course, I’m worried at the possibility of getting my offer rescinded
@anotherdude Literally don’t even worry about it, ESPECIALLY if there are other issues like health related. The university will email you with a warning before they get anywhere CLOSE to rescinding the offer. You can then have a chance to explain to them those reasons for lower grades.
The only time I have ever heard of a university rescinding your admission without giving you plenty of warning and chances to explain yourself were for non-academic reasons, like they discover you lied on your application, or get arrested, etc.
Besides all that, congratulations for getting in! Do you know what you want to study?
@thetsaria congrats on your likely letter!! I’m international as well. What were your Scores and ECs?
@thetsaria that’s a huge relief :-p
I got into SEAS. So I’ll most probably be studying applied math or CS. What about you?
@CollegeGuru2020 I am curious that I thought Stanford is REA. How can you applied U Chicago the same time? Or you got accepted notice for RD already now? Thx
Grades: Valedictorian, 95% average, took half my courseload senior year at top uni in my country (UofT in Canada) (though not for high school credit, I overloaded in past years so I only needed a few more credits to graduate)
Testing:
33 ACT (35 Eng, 35 Reading, 30 Math, 33 Science), SAT 2s: 770 Eng Lit; 800 French.
Major ECs:
-2 years working as research assistant in famous chemistry group at top uni in my country (UofT in Canada)
-classically trained vocalist in opera and musical theatre
-black belt in tae-kwon-do
-last summer got full sponsorship to volunteer at a hospital in Nepal for 4 weeks after the earthquake last April
-the summer before that, spent summer in Israel during the Gazan war, volunteered in an organization packaging donated goods to send to IDF soldiers in Gaza while taking two courses in Ancient Israeli History and Hebrew Language
Let it be said that I would be considered a ‘US citizen abroad’ rather than a strict international (no idea if that gave me an advantage in admission), I was born and grew up in Texas but moved to Canada when I was 12.
@anotherdude I got into CC, and I want to study both astrophysics and art history. I’m SO excited for art history, I’ve heard that professors literally go on day trips to the Met. I also want to do pre-med, which is supposedly super tough, but, oh well. I’ve heard Columbia is pretty grade inflated even if the actual coursework is tough.
I’m still waiting to hear back from some other schools before making my final decision (HYPS), but even if I didn’t get into a single other school I would still be ECSTATIC about attending Columbia, lmao. Where else did you apply?

@thetsaria Woah!!! Those are some interesting summers there!
@RoselandWeighing you’re totally right. EA acceptance to UChicago and likelies to Stanford and Columbia
@thetsaria Astrophysics and art history is a really interesting combination. While double majoring will be hard, I think that you can concentrate in a particular field while majoring in something else, so it shouldnt really be a problem if you decide to go ahead with both astrophysics and art history. Even I’m planning to concentrate in either economics (not sure whether you can cross register between schools) or mechanical engineering.
I’m waiting for decisions from Harvard, Penn M&T and Stanford (and a lot of other colleges, but I’d not choose any of them except the ones I’ve mentioned over Columbia). But turning down the Egleston scholar program will be tough (that is, if I get in). That, and NYC is enticing too.
I never really thought a lot about it cause I thought that I had no chance at Columbia :-p But now that I’ve gotten in, I’m really interested in attending it given its proximity to a lot of major players in finance and tech (2 fields that I’m particularly interested in). I’ll try to attend Engineering Days or another program if at all finances permit before taking a decision :-p
@CollegeGuru2020 you have some amazing choices that I can only dream of having :-p
@anotherdude Thanks! Those are my two major areas of interest, though I don’t know if I would double major. Most likely major/minor. I guess it would depend on how I can handle the workload once I arrive. It’ll be tough on top of pre-med reqs, too
Same, HYPS would be the only schools I would seriously consider over Columbia (didn’t apply to MIT). Even then, I don’t know. Since I got the LL, it’s really grown on me Do you think Penn is better than Columbia? Can I ask why? Do they have a better engineering program?
I was invited to to the CC Days on Campus in April. Because I live in Toronto, it’s just a day drive across to NYC. Once you’ve got your official admittance, you might ask them to help you fund a trip to visit if you live on the other side of the country. Since you got a LL, they really want you to come visit! You never know.
@asiankid88 Thank you! Where else did you apply? And may I ask where you’re from?
@thetsaria I live in India. It wouldnt really be possible for me to attend Engineering Days without some financial assistance. I do plan to ask Columbia about it, but I’ve heard that they fund travel for all the named scholars, so I’m waiting for those decisions.
I’ll definitely not choose Penn Engineering over Columbia. Through the M&T program at Penn, I’ll not only get an engineering degree, but also get a degree from Wharton. That’s actually my top choice because I believe that I’ll be a great fit in the program. And also because if I get admitted to the program, I’ll never have to go to B-school again (which is what I plan to eventually attend). You’re correct. Columbia’s really grown on me too after getting the likely. It’ll be really tough to turn them down if I get into my other top choices too
@thetsaria I’m from Taiwan!! haha. I applied to harvard, penn, dartmouth, yale, and cornell! (some other schools too)
