Columbia Class of 2020 RD Thread

I received no interview and I’m fairly confident about my chances on Thursday.
Chances of rejection that is. But that is entirely unrelated to interviewing anyways.

@thetsaria I also got rejected by USC but only a few hours after I got into Stanford - I wouldn’t worry about it

Yeah, I want to learn what the deferral acceptance rate is too.

@khanam Done with the UCLA and Berkeley threads, onto the Ivies! Congrats on your daughters’s likely letter, really hoping I get in on Thursday. We had similar stats and extracurriculars from what I remember!

@dreambig98 lol yes, shamelessly living vicariously through her. yeah very similar stats. her UW GPA is 3.94 and yours is similar and similar internship experience as well.

@khanam Yup!! Pretty insane. I’m obsessing over this decision, my counselor shouldn’t have told me anything about the email Columbia sent her! I’ve probably read my essays like 10 times today…my god

Can someone explain what Tufts syndrome is, please? I’ve heard it being used around.

@dreambig98 lol! thats got to be getting you into a tizzy. try and relax. i remember i kept myself completely occupied 30 years ago doing everything that had nothing to do with anticipating the admissions mail (they did not have portals and emails back then lol). literally did everything else to not be at home those days - went out to meet friends, took grandma over to visit an aunt, took every opportunity to run errands (and I never did any errands), played on the space invaders machine for hours straight, every thing you could imagine that had nothing to do with college to work off the nervous energy.

try and distract yourself. its 2 days - everything has been decided already. que sera sera. you also have quite a few good colleges already in the bag. anything else will just be icing on the cake.

good luck!

@schroscat Tufts syndrome is from my understanding a term used to describe applicants who get into highly selective unis and are then rejected from somewhat less selective institutions (ie: Someone accepted to Yale but rejected from Tufts). The implication is that the reasoning that led the lesser known institution to reject the usually very impressive applicant was that the applicant was clearly not going to accept the offer because he/she had not shown enough interest and was likely to receive offers from more highly selective institutions. Thus, it is essentially seen as an attempt to protect yield rates. This has been known to happen to high stats/very impressive Tufts applicants who were rejected/wait-listed (which is how the term originated).

@Ballerina11 Thank you so much!

dudes, did any of your school counselors receive emails regarding the release date? :expressionless:

@schroscat np. @YOLObutFailed Yep, my counselor mentioned some emails to me today in passing. Not sure which schools though.

Is there any correlation between these emails and acceptance? Or are they just some sort of formality? (Question, not speculating) cause she did not receive an email from MIT & Stanford (nobody in my school was accepted). Or maybe I’m overthinking things lol. international applicant btw

@dreambig98 5 of 6 applicants in your school got in Columbia? Is your school a magnet school? Also, I doubt that Columbia acceptees would not get into Berkeley.

@khanam Thank you for the advice, I’ll definitely try to distract myself as much as possible, I’m just super excited!!
@Desiree2 yes! And not at all, we are a magnet school to a state school, so this is SUPER surprising to everyone (my school counselor sent emails to every teacher in the school, everyone freaked out). I only know 6 who applied (including me), but 5 were accepted, which is an insanely high amount for my school. Also, same, because Berkeley is very holistic in their admissions! But every school is different, I guess. Super nervous!

Did anyone else have to upload financial documents to the IDOC? I’m just curious, since I didn’t have to do this when I applied early (I was deferred).

I did, RD applicant

Do you all need some comic relief? I know I do- daughter awaiting RD decision tomorrow. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/30/opinion/college-admissions-shocker.html?action=click&contentCollection=Opinion&module=Trending&version=Full&region=Marginalia&pgtype=article

@Momof6PA Hahahaha love that article!! Columbia > Stanford

So far my daughter’s school has 1 ED to Yale through Quest Bridge and 1 RD to Stanford (deferred from ED) 4 to UCLA and 4 to Berkeley. As far as I know my daughter and her friend are the only 2 applying to Columbia. Both have been accepted to UCLA and Berkeley. We are waiting on Columbia and Princeton tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you all!!
