hi guys! so i never posted my stats or anything but i wanted to tell any future readers interested in columbia (or any other ivy league or competitive school) about my experience with the application process. basically, i go to a private high school and have always been in the top 5 (or less? we don’t rank) of my class. i had straight A’s freshman and sophomore year and straight A’s junior year except for a C+ in AP physics. there is a long explanation for why i got the C… anyways, i scored a 5 on the ap test and, again, besides that bad grade i had an A in every other class (and i’m gonna graduate having taken like 15 AP’s). my 1st quarter senior year grades were also all A’s. but what i’m trying to say is that a C IS NOT GOING TO STOP YOU FROM GETTING INTO A GOOD SCHOOL. i applied ED to columbia and got in. again, each applicant is different and you have to take the whole application into consideration. but what i’m trying to say is that ONE (or maybe two) bad grades won’t stop you from getting into an amazing school. if you want to go to columbia and think you have a decent chance of getting in, APPLY. they accept real people.
just wanted to put that out there.
(oh, and yes i got into the engineering school with a C in physics.)
I agree with @3141592653589 ; I also got a C in my sophomore year of high school which, at the time, devastated me. It was only after my acceptance that I realized that one bad grade didn’t ruin my application. The admissions officers are human too, so as long as you do your best to make up those occasional slips, you still have a chance at getting into great schools.
@columbiagenie @3141592653589 you guys give me hope… a little bit at least…
did any of you ED applicants get nominated for named scholars at Columbia?
To the best of my knowledge, I haven’t been nominated for named scholars. When and how would ED applicants be notified of a potential nomination? Also, other than the prestige of the title, are there any actual benefits to being a named scholar?
For those of you who were deferred, where are you going to find the RD decisions? My portal only displays info for the ED application, there isn’t any information about RD.
Anyone here interested in premed at Columbia?
Posting for son! Accepted and attending-he is so excited!!
Wow incredible - now it’s between 2 Ivies, Tufts, Vassar, some other LACs, and Trinity CT
ED: Wharton vs Columbia
Hi there!
I’m an international student applying in the 2015/2016 cycle. If you’re curious about my stats, I would say that my overall portfolio would put me in decent stead to try for the ivy leagues but they will definitely still be “reaches” for me, especially considering the fact that I am an international student.
I intend to study major in Economics at university and hopefully go into finance/banking if possible. I recognize that in accordance with that Wharton should be the dream school. However, I really love New York City and going to Columbia would help me to taste a wider variety of subjects.
My questions are:
- Which schools have lower admission rates for ED (i.e. which is harder to get into)? Although the ED rates for UPenn and Columbia are available online, they do not specify the admission rate of Wharton specifically. Could anyone comment on this please (I’m not from the US so I don’t have sufficient knowledge/exposure to infer).
However: I’m assuming Wharton should be HYSPM-level hard to get into, making it harder to ED into than Columbia?
- Does Wharton really give you a lot more opportunities banking/finance wise than Columbia?
Thanks so much!
Guys, I need help. I’m applying ED to Columbia this fall and was wondering if you could help me out with the CommonApp supplements. As for the “list” ones, do you think it’s sufficient to list the books/magazines/others only or to provide a detailed description? Please I def need help!
@frspzz list form. I got in and everyone else I know who got in just used a list.
@frspzz While I believe most kids use a list, you should do whatever feels right. To describe each (I’ve met some others who got in that did) can add character/personality to the supplement, but it obviously isn’t necessary to do so.
This is just a helpful post! Going to apply ED to Columbia this year, wish me luck!! =)
