Hi, I was wondering whether anyone knows anything about Columbia Grammar in New York? Is it one of the more competitive private schools in the city in terms of academics?

Thanks!

Hi, I was wondering whether anyone knows anything about Columbia Grammar in New York? Is it one of the more competitive private schools in the city in terms of academics?

Thanks!

I believe that a few other schools you should look at include:
Horace Mann, Spence, Nightengale(OR something like that… No idea the name really)

I think Spence is the only all girls…

Message me if you want more info. I’ll ask my neice. She is going to attend Spence as a new lower schooler(4th grade or 6th grade or something)

Both Spence and Nightingale are all girls. Columbia Grammar is not as strong academically as Trinity, Dalton, Horace Mann, Fieldston,or Riverdale . The deadlines for applying to day schools have long past. Some schools do have spots though, so call around. If you are doing it next year, make sure you call for applications/tour appointments immediately after Labor Day, or you wont get a tour/interview spot.

i think it’s nightingale-bamford (all girls)

cecily von ziegsar (gossip girl creator) went there

bamford went the way of white gloves. The official name of the school is The Nightingale Bamford School, or NBS, just as official name for Columbia Grammar is Columbia Grammar and Prep School, Riverdale – The Riverdale Country Day School, etc. It is referred to as plain Nightingale or NBS, most commonly.

There are also two single-sex day schools in NYC that rival even the Exeters and Andovers of the boarding school world in academics and exclusivity – Brearley (all girls) and Collegiate (all boys).

Collegiate was founded in 1638 – I believe it’s the oldest private school in the country – and admits about 10% of applicants.

These schools don’t offer nearly the amount of FA that Exeter and Andover do, though.

Does anyone know what Columbia Grammar’s acceptance rate for 9th grade is probably like?

I don’t know the exact figure, but it’s tough. CGPS’ overall admissions rate last year was 18%, and they don’t admit as many 9th graders as Trinity or Horace Mann (I believe HM doubles its enrollment at grade 6 and again at grade 9). Some students will leave for one of the selective publics like Stuyvesant, Hunter and Bronx Science after 8th grade, and some will move out of town, but not many. Also, The Town School (K-8) is traditionally a CGPS “feeder” school and will place a good number of students in grade 9 each year.

Then again, these could be a couple of weird years in admissions depending on how Wall Street shakes out. And that’s no joke about calling the day after Labor Day.

mhmm is correct that the academics at the prep level are not in the top tier of NYC privates, but Columbia’s small classes (average of 13 students, and a 7:1 student-teacher ratio) and strong music and theater programs might appeal to you. I also get the sense that the school has something of a liberal bent compared to other Manhattan preps. Out of 92 students in the 2008 class, the most graduates attended Oberlin and NYU (6 each), Michigan (5), U of Rochester (4), Lehigh (4) and Yale (3).

Does anyone know what riverdale’s acceptance rate is?
