Columbia GS Fall 2019 Early/Regular Decision Thread

I emailed them stressing about how they’re about five weeks over the timeline that they personally gave me, the point of contact said that they were going to tell the admissions committee that I am requesting an early decision. Doesn’t feel very early but there it is. I’ll let you all know when I hear back

@AurumReichert I am soooo beyond tempted to do the same thing but I’m too paranoid to actually do it. I must say though that this wait feels unreasonable. Over 3 months have gone by and if i don’t get an answer soon it will be too late to drop the summer class I am enrolled in at my current institution (one that won’t transfer over btw if I do miraculously get in) ?

Is it too late to share my stats here? Can someone tell me if I’m being unrealistic about my chances of getting in at this point?

— International student
— 2 years of experience working at McKinsey&Company (started working right after graduating from high school due to economical difficulties in my family
— 95 on the Duolingo English Test (the required grade is a minimum of 70)
— Academic participation: I won the National English Festival for the Impromptu Speech competition. Also, I won a couple of honorable mentions for “best use of a foreign language” on entrepreneurship competitions; placed first on the Spelling Bee.
— I have a blog where I encourage young people to read and learn languages.
— Huge supporter of the LGBTQ+ community and minority groups in general (both inside and outside) at the Firm
— Lastly, I’m 20 years old.

I feel sorry to see those comments! Maybe I was the last guy who got the decision(four weeks ago). The admission officer initially told me on April that if I submit all materials before May 1 I would get a decision by May 15. Otherwise I would get one by July 15. I submitted my essay on April 30, was interviewed on May 15, and fortunately got a decision on June 5.

@SMSNYAL strange my application was fully complete on April 28th and I’ve heard nothing

Same. My application was complete 4/19 and crickets.

@mamabear336 I can only imagine a few possibilities; either they’re waiting to see how the class fleshes out because we’re on the fence like a waitlist, or we’re just denied

@AurumReichert @mamabear336 I don’t know if I’m being delusional about this whole situation or what, but in the online forum they said they picked applications at random so the decision release would also be random. Maybe we still have a chance? If we were waitlisted/denied, what’s the point of making us wait?

@bluethinker @AurumReichert I have been assuming the worst since the end of June. Anything else would be a miraculous surprise. I am kind of heartbroken though because I don’t know what else I could do to be a competitive applicant, and know many others who were arguably less competitive than myself who were accepted weeks ago. This process can really mess with you.

@mamabear336 I agree. A good friend of mine with the same softs and worse GPA was accepted a while back.

@bluethinker I try not to take things I read here as the gospel in regards to how the admissions department operates

@AurumReichert @bluethinker ok! Weird and annoying update: my portal now shows a SECOND standardized test as being confirmed/received on July 3rd. I only submitted one. No idea what’s going on anymore, but I am going to call on my lunch break LOL. Each call feels like I’m dampening my chances, but what chances are there to truly dampen anymore?

@mamabear336 as I mentioned a few days ago, they randomly added a second test score for me as well except it was marked as not received and I had to call. Not sure why changes are being pushed this late to be honest

@mamabear336 @AurumReichert I have a second standardized test as well, this will be my first time calling.

@mamabear336 @AurumReichert the funny thing is, I did not submit a standardized test because international applicants don’t have to. This is weird.

@bluethinker I’m sure they did some system wide update which pushed that requirement to all of us

@mamabear336 @AurumReichert the funny thing is, I did not submit a standardized test because international applicants don’t have to. This is weird.

I called and was told the hold up is simply due to volume of applications and was guaranteed a decision no later by the 16th, although they are aiming for the 15th. Fingers crossed everyone. The women I spoke to at admissions said they were reviewing applications as we speak!

@AurumReichert Well I was in a different situation because I applied for Columbia College at March 1 and then forwarded my application to GS except for an autobiographical essay. The timeline they gave me might be different from yours. So don’t lose hope!

@mamabear336 did they mention anything about the standardized test on the portal?
