Ok so i got into Columbia through the School of General studies, which from most accounts offers the full Columbia education and a bachelors of arts. I was also acdepted as a transfer to NYU’s College of Arts and Science. I am a non traditional student in that i’m 30yrs old and took time off from school. Both schools are obviously respected.
I understand GS had a higher admission rate but the education is the same. So where should i go?
If cost is the same and you’re not in some special major that NYU is very strong in, I’d definitely choose Columbia GS. One is Columbia. The other is not.
My husband is a non-traditional student who attends Columbia through the School of General Studies. It IS the same education - you register for the same classes in the same sections as CC and SEAS students. My husband is a statistics major and he takes his coursework alongside the traditional undergraduates. The acceptance rate is higher because there are fewer students competing for those slots and because other factors besides just your test scores and prior high school performance are taken into account. But acceptance rate doesn’t have anything to do with the education that is offered.
If you have a scholarship that will cover all expenses, personally I would also choose Columbia. NYU is a great school too, but Columbia is amazing - you can use all of the same career resources and networking and faculty and facilities as Columbia students can.
@PurpleTitan and @julliet thanks for your input! I guess I only considered NYU because i got onto the traditional college, but I also agree Columbia offers much more. NYU is certainly no Columbia…thanks again!
If the choice was between Harvard Extension School/Northwestern SPS and NYU, I may choose NYU, because those divisions are segregated from and don’t get access to the same services as the flagship undergraduate colleges at those unis and usually don’t have regular faculty teaching classes, but Columbia GS students get the same access to anything as other Columbia undergrads.
I also think Columbia is the better options because there will be way more non-traditional students than at NYU, so you won’t feel like the odd one out.
