Yeah, Ill just figure something out.

Alright guys, I have a question now. I applied Columbia ED but when I saw that the interview was optional, I was like ehhhh w/e. Would it really be a big plus if I had an interview?

did they contact you for an interview? If so don’t decline it. Being an ED’er, you should show as much enthusiasm as possible for the school. Unless you have a REALLY good excuse not to go, it will probably count against you if you turn down an interview. I think in most cases interviews will only help you, not hurt you.

I mean, if they offered me an interview, I would most definetly go. It’s just that no1 has contacted me yet. It might be because my second letter of recommendation still hasn’t been proccessed

They don’t wait for your application to be complete, skamal10. I was contacted the week after I submitted part 1 of the application for RD.

Doesn’t it depend upon the alumni in your area and all?

I submitted my Application for Admission Part 1 [ED] way back in September and have my interview scheduled for this Saturday. yes, I’ve been contacted almost two months later!

And btw, I don’t know if you’ve tried out the Columbia live chat sessions, but they’re really helpful in finding out information from current students and Admissions Officers directly!

Hey.

For those of you who have gotten interviews: generally, how long after submitting part 1, does one get an interview? Obviously, i know it varies from applicant to applicant but still…

My interviewer contacted me the day after I turned in Part 2 of the application (November 2). I turned in Part 1 at the end of September. Had my interview yesterday, and it went amazingly well. We got along great, and with the exception of one or two questions, I had a great deal to say about everything asked and he had a lot to say in return. When he got to the last question, he checked his watch and was startled to see that we had gone on for an hour and a half. According to him, most of his interviews last around 30 minutes because the kids are too nervous to say anything other than “yes” or “no”. As I was leaving his office (lawyer), he told me that I was the type of kid Columbia wants and that he hopes I get in.

Some highlights include him mimicking a Japanese teacher he had and telling me about the student protests that occurred (he graduated in '69). I was really worried that he would be a stern old guy, but he was really chill and I had fun.

Awww TheHalfrican. That sounds awesome. Did you apply ED? Good luck dude! :)

HMJ, I think it can be anywhere from a few days to three-four weeks?

XoKiwiKisses are you Kiwi? I mean, NZer…?

Sounds like it went well. (But don’t get your hopes up too much, your guy isn’t get you in alone.) A Columbia interview – or any other school or job interview – is just a conversation. An interview isn’t a police interrogation. You do well if you keep the conversation going and don’t make the interviewer bored and checking his watch to see when the misery is over.

At least my interviewer didn’t ever check his watch. Oh wait, maybe that was because he didn’t bring one.

But on the bright side he ignored his cellphone when it rang the hour bell, which was probably the cue to end the interview but we kept talking for another twenty minutes.

I was just contacted by a Prof in Windsor (I live in southern Ontario). It looks like my interview will be this Thursday, but I still have to call him later today (I do not like calling! lol). I’m kind of nervous, but kind of excited to. He’s actually a retired prof from uwindsor.
Are interviews important? I know they aren’t the biggest thing considered, but could the interview maybe be the final deciding factor?

my interviewer was amazing! he was really funny and told me about how he had ADD in high school, bombed the SAT’s, and hates reading. he os really young and just a real person… so i felt comfortable talking to him .

except he was talking almost the entire time! i didnt get much in… but nonetheless it went well. it was also laid back… we had our interview at starbucks

btw, i sent part 1 in oct 10, and was contacted for an interview oct 23

Yeah, the same thing happened to me, he talked A LOT. But he was pretty cool too I guess. He played soccer and chess…and yeaaah. When I asked him why he chose Columbia, he said that he went to his counselor and asked which Ivy League was the easiest to get into, and she said Columbia. Plus, he said he got rejected from Dartmouth and Stanford. I thought that was a pretty weird answer.

But I think it just depends on the kind of people they are–he talked a lot in my friend’s interview too. I don’t think that can affect our admission chances significantly. :)

Yes, my interviewer also talked non-stop, and that’s pretty much why I felt it didn’t go THAT well. After the questions he talked about himself a lot and it felt like he hasn’t had a chance to talk about these things in years…so I felt a bit stupid sitting there trying to say something more interesting than “wow”. But really, I learnt A LOT. And he told me that he wanted to go to Columbia because unlike Princeton and Harvard where all the kids are from the same sort of families(private high schools, rich families) you get ALL sorts in Columbia. And his best subject was art humanities where he always got A+, and he was in the same class as Obama. And that all the things Obama talks about in his speeches about being a better person is from the humanities classes in the Core Curriculum. And Obama was a transfer. ETC.

Also he told me that Columbia is now (it wasn’t when he was in school because he managed to get in at 16) very picky about admissions. He interviewed THE most brilliant student last year and she got into all the schools she had applied to. Except for Columbia. So she had to go Princeton instead. Huh…

Unless this guy is referring to the Marx-Engels Reader or The Prince, your interviewer is full of crap. I don’t think one can find much of the teachings of Adam Smith, de Tocqueville, Locke, the Bible, Plato, etc. in any speech the President has given.

Hahah ofcoursee he was in the same class as Obama. No offense, but I agree with Columbia2002, I think he kinda made some of the stuff up.

But I don’t think that should hurt your chances…as long as you didn’t do something totally socially ■■■■■■■■ you’ll be fine. Good luck Katy3028! :)

No I didn’t take off my pants and set it on fire thank god…

What he really said was that he was in the same year as Obanana not that he knew him. But he might have exaggerated a bit about the CC yes. At least it’s got nothing to do with my app…:)
