I am a sophomore in high school and took all pre-AP classes that were available to me last year as a freshman, with A's in everything except for pre-AP Biology (high B). This year, I am taking 3 AP's and the rest of my classes are pre-AP, and all are A's except for Spanish, (high B) which I plan on getting a tutor for. We do GPA a little differently at my high school, pre-AP classes get a multiplier of 1.1 and AP a 1.2. My weighted GPA is a 103 at the moment. I plan on taking as many AP classes as possible for the rest of high school, and aim to get a score of 2200 or above on the SAT. Do I have a chance of getting into Columbia?

Wait until December 15th then come back and read this thread. Your questions will be answered.

stalkermama, i laughed. quite hard. brilliant answer. sruthireddy, there really isn’t enough info about you to make an informed prediction. gpa means practically nothing outside the context of your school/your class rank. similarly, telling us what you plan to get on the sat is pointless. from what you’ve told us, sure, you have a chance, as much as anybody. which is to say, statistically, not much. but you have time, so do well in school, choose impressive extracurriculars that you are passionate about, and do well on tests. i wish i’d known i wanted to go to a school as competitive as columbia when i had the opportunity to substantially affect my chances of getting in.

hahahahahaha k cool thanks guys!

and stalkermama i don’t get it…

december 15th is the date when early decision applicants (yours truly included) receive their admissions decisions. at least, it typically is. right now, the columbia website simply says that ED applicants for this year will receive their decisions by mid-december.

i’m not applying sophomore year!

You’ll be able to view their stats…

the idea is that you’ll be able to see the stats of students that are accepted this year, which will be a better indicator of your chances when you apply, considering that this is columbia’s first year on the common app.

It will likely be more competitive in two years, though. Not that it makes much difference, since it’s next to impossible to speculate with any certainty whether an applicant will be admitted when you know all their academic stats, let alone when you can only roughly estimate what they will be.

OP, it’s far too early to worry about this. Do what you can to be an attractive applicant; take the most challenging and interesting classes you can and excel in them, explore extracurricular activities and find one or two that you’re passionate about, develop mature relationships with teachers and fellow students, and have fun. Don’t obsess over your chances of admittance to Columbia or any other school this early in your high school career; it’s far too early to tell, and focusing too heavily on it could prove a detriment toward becoming the kind of person that selective schools want to admit!

okay thanks for all your help guys!
