just found this website and on wall street parents are always having the "what does it take to get ur kid into the ivy league debate" so i picked up the phone and called admissions at columbia college (i graduated in 98). To my surprise they were very forthcoming with info, and even commented on their views of certain public schools etc.

For the incoming class into CC of 2006 80% of legacies were accepted. She said that this is the average every year and the she had intimate knowledge that yale and UPenn were similar.

If this is seems hard to believe, I encourage you to make the phone call yourself. Like i said, they were more than happy to have the conversation.

that number is pretty shocking. While im not a legacy, my mom did go to grad school there? would that help- like a partial legacy? lol i dunno... she was actually pregnant with me while attending...

my dad got his PhD at columbia, is that going to help me at all?? i heard it only counts for undergrad....boo

Penn says on their website that 30% of legacies are admitted and that we make up 14% of the class. I believe that this is probably messing with you gullible Columbia hopefuls.

http://www.admissionsug.upenn.edu/applying/profile.php

Venkat89, see if u can find those stats for wharton.

My dad also got a graduate degree (MBA) from columbia. I e-mailed them, and they said it did not count as legacy status, but was "considered" in the application process.

Penn does not publish individual statistics for its 7 undergrad schools beyond how many students each has (and number admitted ED) as far as I know. Also, legacy helps very little for Wharton unless your name so happens to be Trump.

80% of legacies are accepted...but how many legacies apply each year?

approx 90 applied for 2006 admission to columbia college and they accepted just over 70.

I really really really doubt it's 80%. Brown is notorious for alumni and that's only upper 30%'s. Someone in the admissions office does not know what they are talking about. How can it be 80% when Columbia's overall acceptance was 9% last year?

geez. just read that as i was posting ttforcefed. wow that's amazing...

ATTN: THIS IS UTTER BULLS**T

The legacy admission statistics are very closely guarded secrets at Columbia. And, there's no way it's even in the range of 80%. If I had to guess, it's between 15% and 25%.

where are you getting your info. ttforcefed?

out of 17151 applicants to columbia college 1661 were accepted. That means if im correct then 70/1661 equals 4.2% of the class are legacies. Venkat just provided a link that says at UPENN 14% of the 2006 class were legacies so im not sure why you would call ********.

Make the call urself if u dont believe me.

As far as this being closely guarded secrets, maybe. I called, i told them what class i graduated from. Maybe they could tell how much ive donated over the past 9 years, i dont know.

i called last month and they told me that 90 applied and just over 70 were accepted.

The person i spoke to is actively involved in admissions.

I just want to edit my last post. For some reason I said that Penn has 7 undergrad schools. We have 4. Stupid typo. Also, I'm really skeptical that only ~90 legacies apply annually.

They probably have several hundred legacy applicants in NYC alone. 90 legacies applying--this is flame.

i was equally as surprised by the low application rate, and clarified that stat several times.

No, you're just full of crap.
