Hi! I’m a sophomore in HS and i’m applying for SHP next year. Here’s some stuff about me:
science/math courses and grades:
9th grade - Biology honors (A), geometry honors (A), Advanced-level (right under honors) chemistry over summer (A)
10th grade (and current grades) - algebra 2 honors (A+), anatomy and physiology (A-), scientific research (A+)
Quick question: even though i haven’t completed the courses for 10th grade should i still include them on my application?
Race = white
ethnicity = spanish
extracurriculars and volunteering and what not:
local urgent care center, only ~10 hours bc just started
run track at school
babysit
certified emergency medical responder in my state (and i plan to start volunteering but they’re still getting the paperwork through)
and other stuff that i didn’t have enough room to write about in the essay
GPA on transcript: Weighted = ~4.18, unweighted = ~4
Rec: still deciding between two teachers but I know they’ll be really good (question: do you think a math or science teacher would be better?(
Here’s my essay (still tweaking it though):
I was first exposed to the world of science at merely five years old, but for tragic reasons. I was told my father was persistently in the hospital for “headaches”, but words like pacemaker and cholesterol floated around. As I grew older, I learned it was a heart attack that ultimately killed my father. This is my inspiration for becoming a surgeon when I am older, as I want to prevent others from suffering through the loss of a loved one. I have also grown to love science for how it explains both the little and big things that happen in life.
In fifth grade, when I attended [name of my old school out of the country], I was placed in the Math Olympiads program. At first, this was surprising - was I really that good at math? Being a part of this organization pushed me to hone my mathematics skills, and now I have a deep passion towards the subject. I particularly enjoy how there are various ways to approach a problem and how it explains the way things functions.
My current math/science courses are Algebra 2 Honors, Anatomy & Physiology, and Scientific Research, in which I am designing an experiment on neurodegenerative diseases using drosophila. I have received First Honors every semester. I have recently become a state-certified Emergency Medical Responder and volunteer at my local EMS. I also volunteer at my local urgent care center, babysit, and run track. Upon my acceptance into this program, I will come with enthusiasm and dedication to furthering my learning of how everything around me works.
idk if it’s too sappy or anything or not enough sappy, i’ve never really applied for something like this before.
please give me any tips about anything and your opinion on if i can get in, whether you’ve been accepted/rejected into it before or not. thank you so much!!!
