I’m a student in the honors program at Baruch college. Im not quite satisfied with the environment of a cuny to say the least. I like the academics and feel my job prospects are good. Though Im not fully sure how good and that can be kind of risky.

I don’t know if I should apply to Colombia because obviously its very hard to get into. I probably don’t have a shot with my SATs and would have to retake. Low 1300 out of 1600. I have good finance ecs which could go well with my applying for business. Probably could write a good essay, better than what I wrote in high school. Basically, my overall application is better but the SAT part is killing me. Its such a time commitment to retake and study and I would have to rush if I wanted to transfer for fall ‘10. I already put in too much time for the SAT’s and maybe I just can’ get that high on it no matter what.

Hi, I’m a student at a top 10 university considering applying for transfer to Columbia. In high school, I was admitted to Columbia, but was unable to attend due to financial reasons ($40,000 difference in aid packages… no idea why there was almost no offer of aid from Columbia!).

Does anyone know if Columbia Admissions is biased against applicants who have previously applied/been accepted? Thanks!

I’m also considering applying to columbia for sophomore year. I go to a huge state school and have no idea how i’m going to get professors to write letters of recommendation for me. especially professor’s in huge classes who i’ve only had for one semester

I currently have a 3.75 at UCSB in a double major of Business Economics with emphasis in Accounting and Political Science.
I also have internships with Deloitte, Wells Fargo and Wachovia. I am a researcher for a NSF 5 year project emphasized on the internets impact of social movements and political protests. I am also the head of University Misconduct in the Office of the Student Advocate. Those not familiar with this department, it helps students defend their cases when charged with violations i.e. cheating. It also helps mediate any situation that a student may have encountered with authorities at UCSB.
I was also a part of a Political Science research team focused on the impacts of Facebook when it comes to political knowledge v political participation. There are plenty of other things I have done, but these are the main ones.

My high school GPA is a weighted 4.0 while taking 6 AP classes. My SAT is a 1980 (Math 720 Writing 680 Reading 580), SAT II BIO 790 and SAT II MATH 720. My ACT score is a 30.

Also, I am looking to take my next two quarters off to go for a self-discovery experience. I am going to be in a Global Service Corps program known as Buddhist Immersion. Here I will be teaching English to children and monks who wish to become multilingual lectures across the globe. I will also be attending many mediation retreats and living in the monastery.

How would you rate me? What would you suggest I do to make my application as best as possible, essay topics etc

I’m interested in majoring in applied math. i saw that it is offered in the engineering school and columbia college (i think). does anyone know what the difference is and which school is harder to get into?

do the recommendation letters have to come from college professors?? I don’t know any of mine well enough. can they be from high school teachers? thanks!

ok nvm, i just read the requirements and it said college professor. I’m on the stupid quarter system and I’ve only had 3 professors so far, and I don’t know any of them well enough. UGH!

1234, you should mention your previous acceptance to columbia, it can only help. Anyone know how columbia college feels about previously waitlisted international applicants?

baruch, are you at the MHC program at baruch or at their regular honors program? If you’re in mhc, then yay, I am too (at hunter)! some mhc’ers here have already transferred out for the spring semester. Yikes…

yummycheese, I just asked an admissions officer yesterday and she said *at least one rec has to come from a college professor. I am hoping my tutor (English version of an academic advisor) is suitable because though a professor, she never taught me.

Phew, glad to see I’m not the only one who has yet to finish the application!
I find it odd that there’s no Why Columbia question, sticking it all into the reasons why you’re former school isn’t meeting your needs will be challenging.
