I have not submitted Part 1 yet. For those who have, is there a spot where you need to explain what you have done if you have taken time off school for more than an academic term? If so, what does it exactly say and does it have a word limit?

Athletics12, I have the same question. I can’t afford my school any more so won’t be doing the upcoming second semester. I would recommend maybe incorporating this into one of the essays? I am including mine in my reasons for transferring I think.

BTW, your stats are amazing! I am very jealous of this self-discovery you’re embarking on!

Thank you for the compliment. If you have to take time off, you might wanna do the same! There are tons of programs out there

Have you looked at part II tho?

I am looking into a few internships, preferably paid, but most of the applications are coinciding with college ones here, which might prove difficult, but we’ll see!

I haven’t but someone listed them on the first page. First one is why your current school is not meeting your needs, second is a personal essay. For yours I’d say put it in the second and incorporate it into your overall theme, I may just include mine in the first since it is due to my schools inadequate financial aid.

I am a sophomore art student at Cooper Union. My GPA is 3.5, but when you take out the art courses, it’s a 3.8 (almost completely straight A’s, one A- and one B). The problem with Cooper is they are very subjective when they grade you in art, and you can work really hard on a project you’re passionate about, but if the teacher does not like it, then you’re screwed. Many of my art classes are either B’s or A-'s. I’ve taken roughly seventeen credits each semester, I worked two jobs last semester, and I am also the literary editor of our school paper.

As for high school–my SATs are 2080, I have 4’s on two AP’s, and my GPA was a 3.85. This is the reason for another one of my anxieties. I didn’t do that badly in high school, obviously, but my stats aren’t exactly Columbia material. How much will they take high school work into account?

Apparently, Columbia grad school also takes many of its Cooper applicants, and they recognize what a demanding school it is. My teachers and advisers seem to think that this will work fairly well in my favor.

Also, I’m not totally sure yet what I want to study. The main reason I want to transfer is because I don’t just want to confine myself to art–I want to study a few different things and then see what I like. Is this a good, legit reason?

I am applying for the Fall Semester 2010. My quick stats are:

Rutgers University 2.5 GPA and 12 credits
United States Marine Corps
Community College 4.0 GPA and 12 credits
Overall GPA will be at a 3.25 GPA and 24 credits

I was advised to meet with an admissions counselor.

In an email I received the following essay:

Autobiographical Essay (1,500 - 2,000 words): Tell us about your educational history, work experience, present situation, and plans for the future. Please make sure to address why you consider yourself a nontraditional student, and have chosen to pursue your education at the School of General Studies of Columbia University. Successful essays should not only identify and describe specific elements of the program, academic or otherwise, that meets your needs as a nontraditional student, but should also explain why GS is the place for you.

ahhreeyell,

Your reason for transferring, in general, is a good one. However, you need to be specific in the sense that your reason needs to address why you want to transfer to Columbia. You could study a few different things at other (Ivy-League) institutions and decide what you like. What is so special about Columbia that makes you want to transfer there as opposed to somewhere else? Just some food for thought. I hope this helps!

what are my chances at Columbia college if i write my essay on how my gardes are significantly improving? I am a sophmore transfer with mostly 200 and 300 level honors courses. very few introductory and 100 level courses and excellent prof. recommendations
!!

HS GPA: 3.3
GPA at Miami University (OH): 3.7
ACT: 26

my ec’s include about 100 volunteer hours, captain of hs varsity football team, accounting team in high school , i placed in the top ten at the annual district wide competition. i’ve also had many jobs.

my first semester of college i took 20 credit hours, which is the max at Miami and am taking 18 or 21 second semester given i can get permission for excess hours.

I know my credentials arent that good, but just want to know my chances.
Thanks!!

@JasonNabilMalki - It looks like it is just you and I so far applying to GS. Have you started on your essay yet? It seems so daunting to try to write an autobiography, and I’m curious as to what they are looking for. I haven’t met with an admissions counselor yet, but I’d like to. I’m in California so I’m not quite sure how that will work.

AMorrison- Call up GS admissions. They usually have meetings in california in the big cities about their program and such. You will be able to talk to a counselor there. You can also call up admissions and set up an appt to talk to a counselor.

I have talked to one before and we did not go into great detail about the program but she did tell me that they are really looking for how you are a non-traditional student. They want to see that you will fit into their program well. The average age of students in GS is about 29 I believe. They just really want to here how you are non traditional and what your plans are etc.

Hey guys,

I want to see how I stack up. I’m currently attending Kingsborough Community College and am looking to transfer to Columbia University School of General Studies. I’ve spent 1 semester at Kingsborough so far and have a 3.6 gpa. I want to be a psychology major at Columbia and currently am a Liberal Arts major at Kingsborough. By next semester I will be enrolled in a honors course and will be on the deans list, a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and a member of the National Honors Society as well as be apart of the Honors Club. My extra curricular will include working as a mentor at NY Youth at Risk Program. I’m 25 and believe I definitely fit the model for a non traditional student. I’ve been working in the film industry for 7 years and now am looking to change careers to psychology.

Does anyone think that taking courses at Columbia University School of Continuing Studies over the summer would help my chances out as well? I’m also going to try to get in touch with the psychology professors at Columbia and introduce myself to them. Since I may take courses at Columbia during the summer I may not apply till spring 2011. Do you guys think its better to take the GSAE or should I just retake the SATs? Becuase I’m also considering applying to Yale and Standford.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Wish the best of luck to everyone applying to Columbia.

My advice is call Columbia GS and make an appt with an admissions officer. I talked to a lady name Erica Rosen and she was awesome. She could answer any question you may have and really pinpoint what they are looking for in you as a non traditional student

I’m applying to transfer to Columbia College (currently go to Cornell). Good luck to everyone!

Does anybody know how many rec letters we need for Columbia? Every other school wanted 2, but I got the impression that Columbia only wanted 1. I just wanna be safe.

Hi, every one
I am also a columbia fall2010 transfer
Does anyone get their ID letter yet?
I am a little neverous since I didn’t get it in freshman application and was refused after

how do you guys answer the essays? So i have written two essays for the commonapp:

personal statement describing why i would like to transfer out of my current university

the “why College X” essay, which is specific to each college

however, columbia asks for “How and why is your present school not meeting your needs? Please limit yourself to 250 words (1 page)” which sounds like the combination of both my essays.

How must I answer? should I compress them to 250 words or should I submit an essay with the theme “Why Columbia” for that topic, and submit my commonapp personal statement (which actually “Why I would like to transfer out” essay) as the “Personal Essay” ?

It seems impossible to cram “Why Columbia” and “Why do you want to transfer out” into a single, 250-word essay. LOL.

thanks!

I would not try to reuse your essays, it sticks out. I would take material from both essays that you want and put it in the 250 word essay for columbia. the 500 word essay for columbia is a personal statement on who you are and what has shaped you, so maybe you have material for that essay as well

College GPA = 3.9
Major = Biology
High school GPA (the one I graduated with) = 3.6, had a 3.2 when I was applying to colleges.
SAT score = 2290
I attend a tier 4 school.
Currently in my second year so I am applying as a junior transfer.

Extra curricular activities include being the vice president of the politics club at my school, being a member of the biology club, spring break tutoring (member of the “alternative spring break program”), member of the student government, helped start a food drive with my friends and helped organize a local lake clean up.

If Volunteer hours count I have some with the red cross. I have a job too but basically I attend a tier 4 school which is free since I have a full ride but the job provides me with more out of pocket money.

I want to go to Columbia, it is my top school on the list. It is above UPenn, Cornell, and Georgetown. Washington University in St Louis is my second choice.

Anyways I want to know what my chances are for Columbia University.

Anyone else applying to Barnard?

I wonder why Columbia transfer thread this year is so quiet. what’s happening? everybody’s switching to Brown instead? lol.
