For those of you who applied to Columbia as a transfer this year, what was the application like? What were the essay questions?

Personal Essay
Write an essay that conveys to the reader a sense of who you are. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, experiences that have shaped your life, the circumstances of your upbringing, your most meaningful intellectual achievement, the way you see the world - the people in it, events great and small, everyday life - or any personal theme that appeals to your imagination. Please remember that we are concerned not only with the substance of your prose but with your writing style as well. We prefer that you limit yourself to 250-500 words (1-2 pages).

Short Answer Essay Question
How and why is your present school not meeting your needs? Please limit yourself to 250 words (1 page).

Describe a single activity listed represents your most meaningful commitment and why (600 letters)

List and describe your activities, including jobs, during the past two summers (300 each)

and there's also ones for describing books you've read in the past year, and films/performances

the word limit was excruciatingly annoying

lol i went way over. i had something like 500 words for the main prompt.

Thanks!

Another question: Columbia's website says you can transfer after 24 credits (1 year). Do many people apply as a transfer after their freshmen year or do most people transfer after their sophomore year?

I went over too. The limits on everything else though were especially annoying because you weren't able to add any letters past the maximum.

washableglue, i would say after freshman year, simply because of the hefty core

^ Agreed. As rare as it is for admission, they are just as selective with transferring courses similar to their core (to the point where it's nearly unheard of.) From whom I've spoken with at my school, Columbia is also a stickler-albeit much less so-with transferring other courses as well (untrue of other Ivies.) You should get in touch with successful transfers at your school, or ask around. I'm sure some advisors would know.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but has anyone recieved a decision yet? My friend said he got in last week, which seems VERY early to hear from them.

I haven't. I contacted them to ask if it was too late to send something extra (recommendation letter from my boss) and the lady said that absolutely not since they were just getting out of the freshman pile, and putting everything together. She did say that I should have my boss fax it which I guess means that transfer students are up next in their priority pile.

But I think your friend may be a filthy lying hobo.

i was at columbia last week (last week of march) and they were just finishing '12 decisions and said they wouldn't start transfer decisions until after the freshmen ones were done. ergo your friend is most likely lying or INCREDIBLY mistaken. . .

My friend got in last week too, from a CC. I'm sure he's not lying.

does everyone have everything down as received.. i still dont lol but because everything was together i know they received it all

Apparently we receive an email mid-April telling us if there are missing files, before they start reviewing the files. Which is why this "people getting in last week" thing confuses me.

I was surprised myself, since my friend is coming from a CC and didn't really have anything outstanding that would get him in. I mean, he had a 4.0 and some work experience but that's not too hard at a CC. I actually thought he wouldn't have a chance.

But he has no reason to lie to me. He was pretty excited when he called me last week and told me he got into Columbia.

April Fool's Day was about a week ago..

Are you sure he didn't say Columbia College? As in the one in Chicago?

My friend said he got into Columbia (NYC) and NYU in late March. What seemed strange to me was that their websites say that they will announce admissions in mid-May. Further, he had about a 3.0, and I thought Columbia had a GPA req.

I don't see why he would lie about it -- I've never found him lying before -- but it did catch me off guard when he said he's probably going to go to a CUNY instead.

It was after April fool's day (just checked my cellphone) ; )
And I'm sure he didn't mean "Columbia College", he didn't apply there (I know where he applied since I helped him with apps). No reason to lie, and again, he had good/perfect stats, just nothing exceptional.

Maybe someone at Columbia send out some fake letters on April fools day? ; ) That would be funny...

Thomas, I can't explain it.

Twenty8....Yeah, he lied. Just because you've never caught him in a lie before doesn't make what he says now truthful.
