Columbia University Science Honors Program ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

@rainbowrose…how did u think u did last year as a soph? did ur freshman friend get in too?! like…did u think u were gonna make it?! plz reply! im soooo skareddddddddd…im a freshman too! :(

anyone know when we find out?

they get sent out on june 23rd…

so were the tests different?

Hi all.

I’m just a tad curious of the system in which the entrance committee uses to determine the eligibility of the student.
I didn’t perform the greatest during the test. On the challenge, I believe my score was around than 10. (I answered 13, I believe).
Science was a decent effort, although I had forgotten a great deal from Earth Science and had no knowledge in Physics besides circuitry.
“Easy” math was good, besides the fact that I wasn’t able to finish.
Aside from my mediocre scores (probably), I handed my transcript with a nearly perfect GPA, and some math/science oriented extra-curricular(s), such as Mathletes (3 years), 6 courses in research neurobiology, some science research awards like Siemens Semi-Finalist, etc. Plus, my teacher told me he made the best rec. hes ever written.

I’m just hoping they take the “other” stuff (besides the entrance exam) into a lot of considerations or I probably won’t get in as a sophomore. Do you guys know anything about this?

Good luck to everyone!

Most people said they dont care about anything except the examination which you took.

I sadly have to agree with that. ^
One of my friends that got in was literally the worst student to barely scrape through honors. Straight Cs due to laziness and etc. However, he seemed to have done really well on the examination and he got in over a few people with 4.0 GPAs.
It’s not to say that they won’t look at your other things, but a good score on the examination is really the primary factor.

I would also point out, however, that your scores were very good regardless. From what I’ve heard so far, if you get a 10 on the challenge, and score decently on everything else, you should be fine.

When do we find out?

june 23rd is when they send out the letters.

“for the cube one all you do is 10^3 - 8^3
cuz yu take out all the outer layer and ur left with an 8x8x8 cube”
This question was on my entrance test last year too! Keep that in mind future SHP hopefuls :)

rainbowrose, did u think u did well on the entrance exam, or r u freaking out like i am?! lol! im just so scared…i really want to get in…im a freshman btw…i worked rly hard adn i think i did good on the test, i did like 13-14 challenge questions. expecting like 10 to be riight. science is pretty good, easy math i practically got a 100. lol. any tips? plus i have a 4.4 gpa weighted and 4.0 unweighted…im so skared…results are out next month! :(

does anyone have suggestions for me???

desigirl23: i dunt think u should be so nervous. u will be fine.

im a junior. i got 13 questions right in challenge part, but only got half of the answers correct in science part. and this is my first and last try. i should be the one who gets worried lol.

@desigirl23 I took it last year (and the year before :P). I thought I did horribly but I got in  It’s a really fun program.

Actually scratch that. I thought I did horrible on the challenge math but I thought I did REALLY well on science. I guess the SCIENCE part of the Columbia Science Honors Program is actually weighted. I mean, I know they say challenge math matters the most, but if the rest of the test didn’t matter they wouldn’t waste the paper or time giving it to you.

@rainbowrose, thanks, but im rly rly nervous…i rly want to get into this program! :(

omg the results are going to be in like 2-3 wks! I am soo scared!..can anyone try to give me confidence?! im a fresh! ugh…so scary! i rly rly want to get into this program…and i think i did rly well…but idk…im just scared! :(

I’m back! (it’s june… :))

Seriously, desigirl, calm down. Stressing out won’t get you anywhere, and if you think you did well on the test there’s nothing to worry about. Plus, remember you’re ONLY a freshman, so you have the best situation - if you don’t make it this year, you still have two more tries. You’re in a way better position than some of us. If I don’t make it this year, I only get one more shot, and some people on here are juniors so it’s their last/only shot.

Hey… I heard that if your the only one applying to the program from your school, you have a better shot. Is That true? Because some high schools had more than 20 kids apply, where at my high school I was the only one.

I’m not really sure why that would matter, but anything is possible.
Also, none of us really know anything for sure. & again, like before, it’s really not worth freaking out. I mean…obviously I’d love to get into this program, but if I spend the next 3ish weeks freaking out I might go insane.
