Columbia v. Duke v. MIT v. Northwestern

Help!! I've been accepted to all these places but I have no idea where to go! Here's the turnoffs ive found for each place:
-columbia: too many distractions being right in nyc, itd be way too hard to get any work done. plus, what is columbia really strong in?
-duke: too rural, not enough to do outside of the party scene
-MIT: too nerdy
-Northwestern: I was accepted into the automatic-in to Northwestern med school after undergrad, which also means I dont need to take the MCATs. However, northwestern isnt as prestigious as some of my other options

Im not really sure what I want to go into, but premed or the sciences are my most probably courses of study. Financial aid is also not an issue, so I really dont know how Im going to decide! Ill appreciate any help! thanks!

go to duke.

tough choice

I'd say MIT followed by NW just on gut.

If its med school, how do each feed? Not all universities that have a great med school also have a great undergrad feeder system.

Only MIT is really prestigious enough to trade HPME. Columbia/Duke is only slightly more (actually less in quite a few fields/industries like finance/entertainment/engineering) prestigious than Northwestern.

MIT

Duke

Columbia

Northwestern

id go with northwestern you have a guaranteed in.

If you're positive you want to become a doctor, I'd recommend Northwestern since it has a great medical school. If you're unsure about whether you want to pursue medicine, I'd recommend MIT and Columbia (tied), then Duke. For science, math, and engineering, MIT is the place. For humanities, Columbia's the best of the four choices. I don't know much about Duke's academics (not to say that Duke's a bad school), which is why I can't include it in my rank.

NOw that I think about it, what I find hilarious about your post is that you called MIT too nerdy. you had to have known even before you applied that MITwas too nerdy, and if you didn't like that about MIT maybe you shouldn't have applied there.

wow cpt oats, i think if u r good enuff to get into these schools, you must be a tiny bit nerdy yourself... ;)

I'm sure it was said tongue-in-cheek. Everyone knows MIT is nerdy even the nerds.

Anyways, I'd pick Northwestern's HPME program over all of them.

Go anywhere but Northwestern so I have a better chance of the waitlist :)

just wondering… what did you end up choosing?? I am currently debating between Northwestern HPME, MIT, and Duke.

MIT is my personal opinion

Columbia - Embrace the distractions! NYC Upper Westside - - If you are afraid to take a bite out of the Big Apple, you don’t really want to cut sick people open.

If I had to choose I would do:

MIT

Columbia

Northwestern

Duke

I don’t think the people who responded are familiar with Northwestern’s program. Getting into Northwestern HPME is harder than getting into your other options. If you are completely sure you want to go into medicine, HPME is excellent, and the lesser prestige of NU versus the other schools is only a minor issue.

You seem to have complaints about each school, but what you listed for NU is only the slightly smaller prestige that you didn’t like. How do you feel about the school?

edit: just saw this thread is from 2005. Grrr.

based on his post history, looks like he went to Penn.

Columbia or MIT. boston and new york are great

thank you for all the advice guys! i narrowed down my choices to MIT and HPME, and visited MIT and northwestern. i have to say, before i visited mit i thought it would be the stereotypical nerdy place but once i went there, i saw that the students at MIT are VERY varied and i actually rlly liked the atmosphere there. MIT has a very distinct culture and the students there are so enthusiastic about their school! i did not like the atmosphere at northwestern as much; however, I dont think i should judge northwestern based on the few people that i met during my visit.

I am actually having second thoughts on medicine as well, but I still feel that I should take HPME. having the med school guarantee will allow me to explore other interests and even career options during my undergrad years, and if i decide that medicine is not for me, I could possibly drop out of HPME (although hardly anyone ever does that). If i went to MIT, I would still enter wanting to be a pre-med, and would have to tailor my undergrad years to package myself to a med school (so I wouldnt get the opportunity to explore other options).

One more thought: even if I go through HPME and decide that I want to be a doctor, I think I should apply to Baylor College of Medicine either way. From what I know (I may be wrong), Baylor and Feinberg have similar rankings, but as a Texas resident, the tuition at Baylor would be around $6,500 for me, while Feinberg would be around $50,000. So if I took HPME, I would still be applying out (but my admission at Feinberg would still be saved, and that seems like a really good safety net).

What are your thoughts on this?
