Hi, everybody. I was wondering if you could give me some advice on whether I should attend Columbia or NYU? I want to go to college in NYC so I narrowed it down to these two choices. If I attend NYU I would go to Stern for finance. If I go to Columbia I would major in Economics. I want to work on Wall Street when I get out of school. If any of you on here have an opinion on this matter please post something because I am really confused right now! I know that ultimately it will come down to my choosing but I would really like some advice before I make a final decision.

NYU baby

Columbia's located in a pretty crappy area

Wow you're just like me. Take it from me, IF you are lucky enough to be accepted to Columbia, you would be a derned fool to go to NYU instead. Columbia is the cream of the crop for NYU, and is certainly up there for the best university in the nation. NYU is also great, but it's not near as much of a "university" per se, and the name Columbia carries a lot more weight. I mean, come on, if the Olsen twins can get into NYU, anyone can.

The comments made in the previous post do not reflect the beliefs of College Confidential. We love the Olsen Twins.

cream of the crop for NYC*

and j/k NYU is actually quite hard to get into...especially Stern.

I hope I get in. But ya Columbia is still much better.

IMO, you'd be crazy to turn down Columbia for NYU. Your ability to get a job in finance will be at least as good coming from Columbia rather than Stern. Columbia will give you more overall opportunities because it is an overall better school, especially if your interests change in 4 years.

I chose Columbia over NYU CAS... but for someone who already knows they want to work in business, Stern might have a certain draw because it is very focused. You should remember that Columbia has an intense core curriculum. And the area around Columbia is actually nice; to me it feels more quiet/relaxed than the Village. But ummm, don't you want to go to hotel school?

I've never even been there, but I'm not sure you can top Morningside Heights.

This can only come from someone who has "never even been there." Morningside Heights "tops" such fine areas as Bed-Stuy. Morningside is a mediocre area of NYC at best. NYU's location is much better.

If you are mathematically inclined and Wall Street bound, you might want to look at SEAS, as they are creeping closer to an undergrad business major with their new financial engineering program. It was just announced this Spring. Visit both NYU and Columbia. They are very different.

Then, you might want to apply to both and see what happens.

it is true that morningside heights is not a college student's favorite neighborhood, but come on. a "pretty crappy area"? there's a gorgeous park two blocks away (riverside) and unless open-air drug markets are your thing, washington square doesn't come close. there are bars and some decent restaurants, people-watching abounds, it's quiet and there is some beautiful architecture. also, in my opinion you get to see a lot more of nyc by living here because you have to travel through the rest of the city to get to the village and nyu students don't have to budge.
don't hate on morningside heights.. it's still manhattan, and i'm not sure neighborhood is a valid reason to choose one school over another. city, yes. neighborhoods that are 20 minutes apart? no. there needs to be other reasons.

Columbia's also right next door to one of the most dangerous and drug-infested parks in the city (Morningside park). You can essentially see the syringes out the window of East Campus. Wash Sq Park is safe to walk through at night, and Riverside Park is not.

Morningside has no good restaurants. The Village has some of the top restaurants in the city and some of the best cheap eats in the city.

Agreed. MH isn't bad. Lets just take it for what it is.
