Columbia...

Do any of you know if the actual professors from Columbia instruct the Columbia summer program courses? I am planning to apply and if the answer is yes to the question above, I will try to get a recommendation letter from one of the professors. How far will that go in making my high school resume look better?

By the way, the deadline is April 4, but do you guys think if i applied around late March my chances would be lower since admissions are considered on a rolling basis?

Thanks for your help!

What class specifically are you looking into? I took the engineering class last summer and was taught by the normal teachers during the school year. I believe that most of the teachers are either grad students or faculty on campus. It was a great program and the admission to the summer program isn't very competitive.

I'm planning to apply to the Molecular Biology/Genetics course. Is this course the hardest to get into? The instructor is Professor Clark Hung...is he a regular professor of Columbia?

I have already applied to RSI. Columbia is my back-up. However, should i have another back-up? I read on Columbia's website that 1400 out of 1600 applicants are accepted. Why are those 200 applicants rejected?

Please give me advice so that I can make my application in a way in which I will be accepted. Thanks a lot!!!

because those 200 people are dumb

I did the physics one last summer and had a Barnard physics professor. He was quite good though, and technically he is considered to be Columbia physics faculty. The program was quite enjoyable, and if you ask me, I think it helps a lot on resumes, especially so if you are applying to Columbia and/or the class is related to your intended major. As for the rejects, I think it is probably mostly a space issue much like the undergrad reject numbers. Some of the people probably look fake too.

hello, syntheticangel and jaug1. When you guys have time, could you advise me on how you wrote your application essay? I would like to see how you guys wrote your essays so that I can write the essay in a way so that it doesn't look like i'm a fake! Thanks for your patience.

last, I plan to apply to the Engineering Via Design program. Is this the hardest program to get into? I ask this because I read an article (<a href="http://www.columbia.edu/cu/news/04/10/engineering_playgrounds.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.columbia.edu/cu/news/04/10/engineering_playgrounds.html</a>) which said that only 40 students were in the class.

And on the recommendation forms for my guidance counselor and teacher, I accidentally wrote "Engineering Via Design" instead of "Engineering Desing Via Community Service Projects" for my course selection. I hope this does not make me look like one of those 200 applicants who is a candidate for being rejected from the program. Or does it?!
Please reply soon because I will start writing my essay tomorrow and plan to mail the application soon.
Thanks so much for your input!

I would say there were even less in my physics class. Keep in mind that they have A LOT of classes. To be honest, I don't really remember my essay much except that it was really bad. I basically rushed it out in a couple days around this time. It was basically a piece of crap compared to my CC essay, and towards Mayish, I got worried I wouldn't get in because of that lame essay. It was horribly written, but it described me and my interests pretty well. Honestly, just be natural in your essay, and let it come from you freely. I hope that helps and good luck getting in. Maybe you can finally escape Florida like I am going to finally escape Alabama.

sickofflorida, I did take the Engineering Class last summer and had a blast. Your essay needs to be about you and needs to be personal. I don't think that it is right to give you our essays because they don't talk about your interests.

Just apply and hope for the best. It isn't horribly competitive as long as your stats are ok.

Best of luck! If you do get in, I'll let the instructors know that you are coming (both of them are my best friends currently at Columbia).

um, I know that my Poli Sci professor from last semester teaches a course in the summer program...

Are you talking about the summer program for high schoolers? Or are you talking about the School of Continuing Education's summer classes for college students?
