Columbia's Rival?

I think you're referring to one of my posts on the Business forum. I posted that in early March and never said I was admitted to both. I was however, trying to get an unbiased opinion on IB recruiting from both schools. Someone asked about how I "got" my decision from Yale & Columbia in mid-march suggesting that maybe I was violating my ED and I posted in response:

"Haha no im not violating ED. But transfers are always possible. And I dont wanna spiel my life story on here but basically- i get tuition exemption at Columbia-- so for pragmatic reasons I applied and was thankfully accepted there. But I think my #1 love was yale so kinda hindsight/transfer later on if i really dislike Columbia which i dont forsee happening."

Venkat89 for all that antagonization, there's still no rivalry? =( bummer.

Rivalries are not restricted to football and basketball, Venkat89. Pranks would be a good way to provoke a Columbia-Penn rivalry, something along the lines of the "Harvard sucks" prank. TBH, I don't think that there's gonna be another Ivy rivalry besides the HY one, but we'll try keep on trying, ;).

i agree, truazn needs to calm the eff down. the last thing we need are more JohnnyKs trolling around here.

This whole topic sounds so incredibly stupid it's ridiculous. Does it make you feel better about yourselves to have a firmly established hatred of another school? Or are there other... "legitimate" advantages to school rivalry that I'm missing?

Wow, you just missed the whole point...

Did Denzera just call me a troll?

It would simply be too sexy.

But JohnnyK is entertaining, and his posts sometimes have some merit. The other Penn students should leave.

And JohnnyK actually likes Columbia to boot.

He harbors grad school fantasies in SIPA and/or the J-School.

And he speaks in the third person.

Penn-->Columbia? Seems like you're moving up in the world, :D

That's it, I'm going D-Day on your ass.

"You sound like a gay!" (Anchorman) :D

Fight fire with fire, my dear übermensch.

Pearfire and S Snack - you two are at it again. LOL

You guys hate Penn with such a passion, its laughable. Too bad Penn doesn't give a r*ts *ss about your feelings :-)

Honestly, all these posts about how "Columbia trumps Penn easily"....are lots of empty boast, but I've never ever ever seen anyone on this Columbia site support these claims of glory. Show me one set of quantitative measures which support these claims. I dare you... (and please don't quote your beloved Nobel stats --- that would be how many dozen laureates out of 3200+ faculty members?????.....HAHAHAHAHA)

Anyway, only two schools have rabidly negative fans on this site - Harvard and Columbia. Both schools' boosters incessantly tear down other schools - Harvard because they genuinely can't accept the fact that ANY institution could be better then they are at ANYTHING. And Columbia because they can't accept the fact that there are many schools that are equal to or superior to them in many things. Unfortunately for CU fans - Penn is one of those schools. The more that fact is irrefutable, the louder the protests and agonizing and name calling. Just more proof that Penn is moving ahead....and BTW, Penn doesn't really focus on Columbia as a rival or benchmark.

As for the OP, a rivalry between Penn and Columbia????? Why not.....we'd (at Penn) win more than we loose anyway. Bring em on.....And when and if we lost, we'd accept it as gentlemen do, and move on. Take notes Columbia.....that's how it's done.

Well Red&Blue, this is from another poster but here's a quantitative approach if you wanna take a look.

Here are a few others. Source for all is COHE 2005(courtesy of dear posterX)

library books/student (do you have to wait for recalls?)
Yale University 1100
Harvard University 820
Princeton University 810
Dartmouth College 520
Brown University 470
Columbia University 440
Cornell University 330
University of Pennsylvania 290

library expenditure/student (are there enough quality resources in general? are the lights in the library burned out?)

Yale University $6,300
Harvard University $5,400
Princeton University $4,500
Dartmouth College $3,500
Brown University $2,500
Columbia University $2,400
Cornell University $1,800
University of Pennsylvania $1,600

serial subscriptions/student (are there a lot of magazines and rare scholarly journals to read?)

Dartmouth College 10
Princeton University 8
Yale University 7
Harvard University 5
Brown University 4
Columbia University 4
Cornell University 4
University of Pennsylvania 2

library staff/100students (are staff friendly, available, helpful, and willing to help you find that obscure item for your paper? note this is permanent staff only; colleges also hire student workers but those are not tracked here)

Now I'm sure you'll dismiss these quite easily, but hey, just posting it for you to see.
Harvard University 5.7
Yale University 5.7
Princeton University 4.4
Dartmouth College 3.6
Brown University 2.4
Columbia University 2.4
Cornell University 1.9
University of Pennsylvania 1.5

Interesting that Cornell Columbia and Penn are consistently the "worst" in this regard.

Also consider that any "n/student" will inevitably skew against universities with larger undergraduate populations...

Take serial subscriptions/student...Brown has twice as many per student...but it has a student body that is half the size. Whatever the number may be, Penn and Brown have similar amounts. While Columbia still has more, the distance is not nearly as substantial.

When you consider that large swaths of Penn students would rarely be using the library (Nursing, Wharton, SEAS) except for their liberal arts classes, the difference shrinks even more.

As they say, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics.

While more is in theory quite lovely I must say Penn's library facilities have served me quite well.

As Penn is a considerably less wealthy university, I would rather they be directing their funds towards the faculty rather than the stacks...

red&blue, you just missed the whole point, again. Are you by any chances very old? This is not suppossed to be offensive, but it would be a good explanation for why you don't get the intentions of our posts. We don't hate Penn! Have you ever seen a guy mocking his best friend for making out with some random girl? It's bascially the same thing. It's just meant to be fun, and JohnnyK is a nice fellow with whom I get along with. Some ppl gotta start interpreting and stop taking everything literally.

You would get along with me, but I am not actually nice. I am a very evil and self-centered man. ;)

Dude, are you still up or already up?
Yea? I thought you weren't in Wharton, :D
