My son missed the NMSF cut-off by a few points and was named a Commended Scholar. We were given the impression by my husband's employer that SF status was necessary to be considered for a corporate scholarship. But lo and behold, he was notified by the school that he could apply. Just wanted to let everyone know who might be in a similar situation. The Deadline is mid-December.

Jeannemar, have you heard anything back yet? Samething happened with my daughter, Commended Scholar, and eligible for a corporate scholarship. Just wondering when we should hear back on this.

Deadlines will vary by the corporation. Our employer requires an online application for scholarship eligibility due the end of February of the JUNIOR year (ie before anyone even knows who is commended, let alone semi-finalist). They give several NMF and and any left-over scholarships go to other high scorers as “Special Scholarships”. We’ve known NMF’s who missed out on the corporate scholarship because they didn’t know about this early deadline. I am sure there have been commended students who missed out also, both because or the early deadline and because they didn’t think a commended score would be good enough. It is important to know your company’s rules.

^^^

This is true. My older son got a corporate NMF scholarship, and my younger son just missed the NMF cutoff and he got the “Special Scholarship”…and it’s only because they submitted an online app before some deadline during their junior years.

Do check out your companies rules.

Funny you should ask - unfortunately my DH just got down sized so even if my S gets the award I doubt he’ll be able to keep it. So now I kind of hope he doesn’t. But I will report back in the interest of sharing I formation!

Two of my kids were below commended status and still got the special scholarships. The company has so many to give out and they just go down the list of those who filled out the application in junior year. I think D got one with a 179. I was shocked. Then my S had a 190-something and got one. Last D was NMF so she was good too. My H is thinking of retiring before she is through, I had better check to see what happens to the scholarship in that event.
