khsstitches.....some kids who apply to college have no safety schools on their list. Then, some give very little thought to the safety schools and "tack on" their state U (which could be a fantastic school, don't get me wrong, but often they say, "I have NO interest in going there"). Applicants need to put much care in selecting a variety of schools with different odds and put lots of thought into selecting the safety schools. These schools can be excellent ones that simply are a safer bet but should be ones the student likes enough to attend. It need not be their favorite school on the list but surely should not be a school that they are not interested in and only added in order to have a "safer" school. They may end up attending the safety. It does no good to add on a school you do not like or want to attend or to simply add on the state U because, well, it's there.

Another issue is that sometimes on the MT Forum, people think a BA school is a safety because it is a BA. But it is ONLY a safety if it is safety for your own individual academic qualifications. I have had some students who have had Muhlenberg for a safety but for others, it is a reach or a match (though they still should apply as a non audition school but still need one safety non audition school at least). For some, Indiana may be a safety. I have had some have Rollins for a safety but it is a match for some others I know.

The reason we hear the notion of "safety school = no so hot school" is because many are not picking their safety wisely or with care and thought enough to find schools they are interested in attending. They just tack on a safer school (if at all). I see this often on CC's many forums.

Haven't been posting a lot lately but I was rejected from Hartt last week and now, Ithaca.

I am pretty bummed. Those were the schools I felt had the best auditions and that they were the best fit for me. I was so sure that I would have gotten in to either one of those.

So it looks like I will be at Viterbo or (if the waitlist pans out) Roosevelt next year. I am very nervous about moving from SoCal to La Crosee, WI...

LizMT--my D's best friend is in the MT program at Roosevelt and loves it. She tried so hard to talk my D into auditioning there because she is so happy.
Her freshman year she was in another program that is discussed on CC .
She decided to transfer to Roosevelt and it has been a good fit. Besides that she loves Chicago and says there are lots of performing arts opportunites there. Good Luck with your choices.

musicmom1215--I will ask my D about MM. I am sure they know and work with each other as it is a small program. Is MM in "The Full Monty"? My D is one of the four female characters. I also live in North Texas and we have many friends at OCU.

Blank Slate - Thanks. I really hope it turns out well. I am a transfer student too and also from a school that is discussed on CC. Where did she transfer from?

Liz - I'm sorry the other 2 schools didn't come through for you. (it's their loss, kiddo) But I'm happy you have 2 other choices and that you get to transfer somewhere you will be happier. YEA!!!

We came from Calif to the midwest. You will love it!! Sure it takes some time for your blood to thicken as they say - the cold was a bit of a shock. But there are so many wonderful things about the midwest it makes up for the cold. Besides - ever heard of MT being performed in an outdoor amptheatre? I love it when my Calif friends call in Dec and ask the temp - I say it's 72 degrees (that is what I keep my furnace on).

Liz, La Crosse is really not horrible. It's quite a friendly town. Beautiful in spring, summer, fall. It's close enough to Minneapolis which has a lot of theater. I like Viterbo. My son and I spent two days on campus last fall sitting in on classes and spending time with students. The faculty is very good and they are wonderful people. It is a nuturing, positive, and very supportive environment. I promise you won't hate it if you give it a chance. You will have good voice teachers-a super dance teacher(and super nice) and awessome acting teachers. One of my favorite things about the program is the seniors mentor the freshman. You will have lots of opportunities there and I believe there are strong "connections" for you when you graduate. Did I mention that they are super nice??

LizMT - just don't bring a car driving is hazardous, bring your ski's :)

We liked Viterbo too, Rick Walters is a great guy, but D is going to take a pass as we were lucky enough to get an MT opportunity. You will do great! Keep us all posted on how you like the program.

Riesen, you're right, the Delacorte is wonderful! And they not only perform Shakespeare there, even musical versions (Two Gentlemen of Verona a couple of years ago). Last year's 40th anniversary concert tribute to Hair at the Delacorte will return this year for a 3 week run as a full production.

There are many, many outdoor theatre spaces in the country but the reason I specifically mentioned the MUNY was in the context of the discussion by MomofAPrincess about the midwest. In fact, one of my earliest MT experiences as a child was seeing Half A Sixpence at the Camden County Music Fair, another outdoor venue, in NJ in the 60's. There are many, all over the country.

Sorry to continue the off-topicness of this discussion. :)

Musicmom1215--MM is the only other freshman in my daughter's voice studio.
She said he has one of those easy voices that she could just listen to all day. Great classmate and nice to work with.
Their vocal teacher, Robin Cobb, is fabulous. She was Katie Clark's teacher.

blank slate, do you know what Katie's doing now? I haven't heard anything about her recently. I remember years ago, having lunch with a friend in the city and a mutual friend stopped by our table and told us about a talented girl she'd just met. The girl was Katie, who was at NYU in a summer dance intensive and she met with this wonderful musical director, who eventually was instrumental in her casting in A Light in the Piazza.

Katie Clark is currently playing Glinda on the tour of "Wicked". I saw her at the end of January when the production came to Cincinnati.

Blank Slate,

I'm glad to learn that your D has had a change of heart regarding Sam Houston. Sounds like she is blooming where she's planted. If you have time, PM me with an update :).

dancersmom--yes, I was hoping you would see my posts and learn of the change. I have been trying to catch up from all of our travels and my cc time was spent on these posts. I'll try and pm you over the weekend.
