Any committed athletes going into the Honors College? So many questions- don’t know where to start! How difficult to keep up in HC with sports time commitment? Does anyone know if a designated athlete (already verbally and/or signed NLI) gets the same shot at merit money or are they not looked at equally since the university already has them “committed” even if they are a walk on or not on a full ride? Any thoughts and/or experiences welcomed!
Most of the athletes get tuition reduction to in state levels. Additional $$ will be merit based. Uof Sc uses a matrix to determine that additional amount, for which you are automatically considered (including Top Scholars). Just make sure to get your application in on time (October) for full consideration. You will likely hear about the tuition reduction quickly. The additional merit aid info comes in late Jan/Feb.
There was a baseball player that came in same time as D but don’t know how honors played out for him and I think he was recruited before graduation. So it has happened and you should call Honors and talk to them.
Also in general check into Gamecock Promise that lets student-athletes come back and finish degrees (maybe at no cost?? - not sure who it applies to)
Thank you so much for the responses @VAMom23 and @scmom12 - thankful for any tidbits we can get! Very hopeful she can get in state tuition! After looking further into Honors etc., Capstone may be a better fit- but we will see what comes her way. Sounds like they had so many more applicants this year and the stats rose considerably beyond what has been published. What is the earliest one can submit their application? I see all the deadlines but am unable to find dates they open to applications for 19-20.
Based on past years looks like beginning of August, but it would be an easy phone call to admissions to be sure.
What do you mean by “Most committed athletes get in state tuition reduction”? What about if the athlete is a walk-on?
If the athlete is planning to be a walk on, I doubt there will be any tuition reduction unless it is for a non-athletic reason (honors, grades, special program). The point of being a walk on is that there are no athletic benefits so their scholarships are not included with the teams. They might get housing with the team if the coach puts them in touch and they can request roommates suites.
