Is the advisor that the common app wants info about (position, phone number, etc.) the dean (or college official) who wrote me a recommendation? I met with her once, but my real advisor (who advises me on what classes to take) is a professor..the one who wrote me my professor recommendation. Whose information do I give?

It is the person who has access to your full academic and disciplinary information on file with the school.

For those of us who do not have the luxury of a dedicated or assigned advisor (like most private schools) how are we to determine who this person is? do we simply list “someone” who can verify our information, or would it also have to be someone who knows “us”. coming from a commuter school it is hard to meet with only one or two people throughout the year (let alone at all) and an even lesser chance that they will know who you even are.

I took it to an academic advisor/ dean. I don’t remember what her exact title was, but she helps students with course selection, etc (and no she wasn’t assigned to me). She had never met me before I showed up with transfer paperwork, but things worked out just fine. She just needed to access my record to make sure I was a student in good standing.

Perhaps you could call the registrar to find out the right person?
