For the common app main essay - I concentrated on my traits/hobbies with indirect references to a subject. I built it using ‘show-not-tell’ and ‘show-who-you-are and not what-you-did’ approach. But it has some connections/references to my intended major. You can term my common app essay as ‘passion’ type essay - this is not a conscious effort when I started it but it eventually came out that way.
Supplement#1 is about why you chose the major: its the same subject that is referenced in the common app as above. I approached this supplement in a more direct way and used different examples/anecdotes to show my interest - yet - it has couple references mentioned in common app (not verbatim). Basically, as a story telling, my supplement#1 takes off where my common app is completed.
Is this OK - to have a topic overlap between the two essays. I am worried the readers would feel like I am repeating myself (or driving my interest in a subject too forcefully). Should I try another topic for common app or is this workable?
