Common App Doubts - Post here!

I support. If your school gives you GPA calculated then enter it. If not then don’t.

Can you tell me the secret behind those scores in critical reading and specially Writing :stuck_out_tongue: ? I am getting frustrated with my nominal scores in those sections and I guess you can help with some good ideas.
I think I will be leaving that section blank.
I had given SLC and A levels from different schools. Can my counselor from the latter school submit the transcripts from former school ?
I already know I am not getting any help from that old,biggety counselor so I am very worried about my aplication process :(

Haha, writing is VERY easy. The essay required is very formulaic (an intro with a thesis, two or three paragraphs reasoning why your thesis stands, and one conclusion). The grammar bit is just about the “feel” of the sentences, at least the first half of the Writing MC’s. You will need to revise some grammar for the second half and I have no advice for the last part (the passage correction thingy) lol.

I’m sorry but I did not really practice a lot for CR so I have no tips about how to do well in it. Just practice, I guess?

@Zoras10:
My school transcript has both 9th and 10th grade scores. It combines all the scores. I guess I still have my score sheet of grade 9 and 10. That helped. Yes, your counselor can attest your scores but here is how you do it. Photocopy it, get the copy signed by counselor, stamp it and give it to your counselor. Voila! You have high school scores.

Regarding your big and furious counselor… hmm. Help him write your reco. Compliment him. Kiss his ass if you have to. Try and win him over whatever your past relations are. Treat him like a estranged girlfriend. Ask if he needs a shoulder to cry on! (I am not kidding!) Ask if he needs help with anything. Even volunteer to tutor your juniors. This works trust me. Try to work the system.

Other than that, I can only say this.

TO MORDOR!

I am a bit confused regarding the topic of the common app essay. There used to be an open topic question in the previous years. But this year there is no such question. Is the 1st question, a little like an open topic question ? If I divert a little from the topic, will it have serious outcomes ?

@smokie:
You should never divert from the topic. If the topic is central to your identity be sure it your essay is too. In SAT if you divert from topic you get a zero same way goes with common app. In General Paper if we ever were off topic we received an E.

With that being said, my advice write all of it even if it is toff topic. I am sure after you complete the essay it will at least match any one of the topics given. Then choose that topic. How is the idea?
Do not think while writing essay regarding the questions. Just write about what you want to express and it will be the best. I am sure of that.

@GandalfGrey thanks man :slight_smile: i have already started writing an essay about my perspective towards life and how it has changed over time. i’m confused if it fits to any of the five topics.

If the counselor uploads the SLC and the A level certificates, do i still need to send my attested certificates to the college? Is there a place in common app for counselors to upload transfer and character certificates ? or are they unnecessary or do i need to send them myself ? Is sending an application packet to the college address a must ?

@Smokie:
My advice was for those students who had problems uploading these documents via counselor. If your counselor has already uploaded these documents then do not worry about it. Whatever your counselor did was fine.
Regarding the application packet, if you apply a college from common app you usually do not need to send app packets. Unless it is Jacobs University Bremen which asks us to fill out the education history forum and some other colleges. Other than that you are fine.
Do not send packets unless specified. see every college details to see if you need to send something special in a packet.

i have some confusions regarding commonapp

1 how do i report A level subjects under “current level courses”

2 under testing “senior school leaving examinations” what should i fill up? what it actually means?

3 what is CBO under education section??

please explain me! thankx in advance!

What are the final reports,middle year reports and other school reports?
Should my counselor write a fee waiver letter and then upload it?
How many transcripts are to be uploaded by my counselor?

@Zoras10:
final reports- your scorecard of final year.
mid year- if you haven’t completed your high school then, the school has to upload your report of current year. ie mid of +2 or A2
other school reports are mostly submitted by those students who haven’t completed their high school. In Nepal normally councelors upload transcripts with your slc, 11 & 12 or A level as a same document in final year report.
Your councelor doesn’t need to submit all the reports.

If you ask for a fee waiver, common app asks your councelor to verify. the only thing councelor needs to do is check a box in the application, which corresponds your reason

1) I put my friend’s address on CommonApp as my address because I don’t have a mailbox.

In the parents’ details part, a question asks if the parent’s address is same as mine. Earlier, I entered that I make my home with both the parents. Now, what do I do? Do I enter that my parents’ address is sam as mine (= my friend’s)?

2) Do we define each college of Tribhuvan University as a distinct college? There’s a question asking the number of colleges attended by parents, and technically speaking although one of my parent attended different college for undergrad and grad level, both the colleges fall under Tribhuvan University. So how many colleges do I write?

Urgent Help :
In the testing section of common app, there is one Senior Secondary Leaving Examination part!!
So what are we supposed to write in the part “”“Number of Senior Secondary Leaving Examinations you have already taken”""". Is that 2 ? including SLC and +2(A levels) or we should write scores of the subjects of 12th grade?

hello everybody, this might sound stupid but how does the common app send our SAT scores to the school we apply to. I noticed it didn’t ask me anywhere for it. Does the counselor have to upload our A-level transcript?

@Rishav102
common app does not send our scores!! Scores of our standardized tests should be directly sent to the college via college board account! Yes, it is counselor who will upload our transcripts!!
And, yeah sending SAT scores and TOEFL scores costs some amount ( i forgot the exact amount)!! hope it helped

thank you Sadissaw. I have sent scores now. So, do college send some sort of acknowledgement that they have received my common app? I have applied for a few and have no acknowledgements. I have heard that a lot of colleges have not received student applications because of a common app glitch.
A college has asked for a ICAP certification of my college transcript and a bank statement . Is this normal?

Guys, my teachers and principal don’t know English, and we have no computers in school. What do I do for my recommendations ?

Get your paper recommendations in a sealed envelope and send them to colleges by postal mail…

@Rishav102
Yes, every college give you one User name and password so that you can logged in to your application account. There you will be able to see list of things that you got to send to the college, and the things they have already received. Probably, they will put “Tick mark” in received items. If you have not received any kind of info from the college just shoot the email or call them to make sure if they got everything by deadline. Generally, you can submit financial things even after 3 or 4 days after deadline, but COMMON APP with supplements should be send by deadline.

For the bank statement thing, yeah it’s common. Coz it’s better to show your savings with bank verification to be in safe side. Better show the income statement as well so that it substantially cover the cost that you are willing to pay. I guess these things are ultimately necessary during the VISA.( i still don’t know much about VISA stuffs though)… good luck :)

@wuttowski
Hmm… I agree with Ameet, but online app is convenient than the postal one. And, it is not necessary that the Recomm should be emailed from the high school computer. You can take your laptop to your counselor home ( or he may have comp in his home, if still not, u both can go to cyber :slight_smile: ), create email for your counselor ( guide him if he has problem), and guide him throughout the process. Yes, counselor and teachers should really be cooperative here throughout the process.

And, about the recommendation thing, best option is to ask what would your counselor and teachers write about you if they were to recommend you. And, then you can write it in English yourself. I don’t see any other options except this in this situation :(
