My common app essay is about North Korea’s relationship with South Korea and Korean Peninsula being unified after all the meetings between US and two Koreas. I really want to show how I think about it but I’m afraid if it s gonna be too political or polarizing. Should I be genuine and honest about it or should I try to get rid of all political stuff?
But does the essay tell the reader about you? The Common App essay should be a way for the AO to get to know you, not an academic essay.
This is very true. However, this is a prompt about an idea you just can’t stop thinking about. I think the the OP uses the topic to discuss not only her thoughts on the subject matter but her excitement for the topic and ideas about the futue, how it all relates to her own plans and dreams, how she thinks she can contribute to better relations among peoples, etc. it could be a fine topic. This is especially true if OP plans to major in poli sci or has hopes to go into a field where mediation skills are useful.

My ethnic background is Korean, so I wrote about the stories that I have heard from a Korean War generations (who left their families in North) about their thoughts on unification + My background, what I have learned from school which made me think that Korea would be unified some day, but how my opinion has changed after watching several news of North killing bunch of South Koreans + Dilemma that I had after Trump met Kim-Jung-eun, and how it was solved.
I`m gonna major in engineering, so do you think it is not a good idea to write this as my common app essay?
I don’t think it’s a terrible idea as long as it tells the reader about you and what’s important to you. My daughter wrote a supplemental essay about leaving the Catholic church. It said a lot about her as a person and she was accepted ED to the school for whom it was a supplement. She took a chance - it could’ve been read by someone Catholic who might have been offended, but she felt strongly about it and it was something that was truly unique and important to her.
@4gsmom Thanks! I appreciate your response
