common app essay upload prob. Help!

Hi, so yesterday I submitted two applications (due date: Jan 1)

all of our computers are macs and kind of on the old side. my computer and my brothers computer only has appleworks and my dads comp has microsoft word.

So when it cam time to uploading my essay i used my dads computer, but it didnt upload so i went onto my brothers computer and uploaded (it worked) and i switched it to .doc

when i went back onto any other computer to 'view' (except my dad computer which would not do anything when i clicked the view button) it showed up in this unreadable gibberish.

now i am totally freaking out thinking that the college admission people won't be able to read my essay and I have no way to change it now.

help help help. what do i do?

If the essay showed up on preveiw on your brother’s computer, you may be fine. .doc can be problematic though. If you can still change it, save it as a pdf. You can do that with word, at least on recent versions. There are other ways of doing that though, just google it.
.docs are screwy, .rtf didn’t work for me, but pdf is universal. If you already submitted it, you might want to email the admissions office with a copy of the essay in pdf format and an explanation.

well i uploaded from my brothers comp. then wasn’t able to view it on my dads and it was all screwey so it was switched over to .doc

-would i be allowed to email it over even if the due date is today? and i would just send it to the admissions office right?

and if it didn’t work do you think they would send a email/call to ask what happened? uugggh…

thanks so much for you help!

ps. when i switch it to .pdf it says the file is corupt

hey if it makes you feel better I just got ****ed.

Due to certain a situation, I needed to include “the 2000 char extra info” part. I had mine at characters without spaces 1612 but still only 1989 with spaces. I tried to upload the document and it took forever and then did not work, I tried and tried again until 11:58 where I just copy pasted it, a “over the character limit” popup apeared, yet the line below the box itself said “Characters available 11” I had open another, new document, copy paste it in, check the count (not change…) and tried one more time, and finally it worked. But looking at the submission stamp, it already read 01/02/10 My admission was the first.

oooof. ouch.

you should email the admissions office ad explain to them what happened. did it still send though? did you send in the rest of the stuff in on time?
