Common App Essay

I want to write my common app essay about the comedy tv show “The office”…is this a bad idea lmao? Is it stupid and will college officers not get it?

You can’t assume they have watched the show. I guess it isn’t impossible, but I’d try to find something a little more unique to you.

I agree with the previous poster. I have never watched the show so I might not “get” your comments. The admissions officer reading your essay could be the same.

Why would your essay be about a TV show? It’s supposed to be about YOU.

And, for what it’s worth, I’ve never seen The Office.

Same as above. It has to reflect who you are and how you will fit into the university community… Also don’t try to be funny or cute with the essay. Funny to a 17 year old is not funny to an older reader per se.

I disagree! Two years ago, my daughter had to write a scholarship essay on a quote by a historical person on the value of the arts. She loved The West Wing, and wrote about that. Her essay was written in a way that kind of explained the show that even someone who didn’t watch it could get it. She was able to convey why the show appealed to her and its importance, and I think the admissions people could see what she was like. My husband was highly skeptical and thought it was risky–but it was well written and entertaining. When she got interviewed, that was all the people wanted to talk about! She got the scholarship!!

@luckymama64 Your daughter’s essay sounds very creative and unique
@jennaa If you do the essay make sure anyone who didn’t watch the show could get it. I am another who has never seen the office

I agree with other posters^ don’t assume adcoms have watched The Office.

Thank you all for the advice! I’ve decided to take the route of intertwining my sister’s eating disorder to my love of classical studies because that obviously is more meaningful.
